Whatcom Working Waterfront Coalition

Whatcom Working Waterfront Coalition The Whatcom Working Waterfront Coalition promotes the vitality and economic benefits of our working waterfronts for the people of Whatcom County.

What do 140 maritime businesses/people/associations in Whatcom County, Washington, have in common? We revere and protect the source of our livelihood – the Salish Sea and coastal North America. We live and work on these waters and shores or supply goods or services for those who do. However, a survey of our nation’s ports shows a disturbing trend – working waterfronts displaced by non-maritime dev

elopment, shipyards giving way to condominiums. and ship chandleries replaced by boutiques. Because our region is not immune to these pressures we have joined together to form a Working Waterfront Coalition to ensure that our harbors continue to support a thriving maritime sector and to protect the cultural and economic benefits for all county citizens.

Executive Director Dan Tucker sends this photo from his travel this week, of Port Verdres in France, where working waterfronts are not only integrated, but a celebrated part of the town and feature of tourism there. Waterfronts the world over work, just as ours here in Bellingham do!

Features here include dedicated spots for the public to watch the commercial activity, channel buoys that have been painted and displayed along the waterfront, themed restaurants and walkways - tourism and working waterfronts blended well to create a memorable visit to a beautiful town.

Join the Community Boating Center - Bellingham on May 21st for Tide Talks!

Bioluminescence, the production of light by a living organism, has been observed across a diverse range of species around the world. Marine bioluminescence in particular has a remarkably widespread distribution, and is used by many different types of organisms, from microscopic plankton to deep-sea sharks and squid. This talk will serve as a broad introduction to marine bioluminescence, with a focus on examples of bioluminescence found here in the Salish Sea.

Lucy Ritter grew up in the Pacific Northwest with a lifelong interest in all things ocean-related. She is currently a student at Western Washington University, majoring in Marine and Coastal Science and minoring in Environmental Science. This spring, she joined the Community Boating Center as their Bioluminescence Intern, working as a guide and naturalist on bioluminescence kayak tours throughout their 2025 tour season.

"As I travel today, I regret I'm not able to attend the annual Blessing of the Fleet. I am thinking of those who have lost their lives in pursuit of this industry, and of those going out this year. I wish you all full holds and fair winds. Thank you for the work you do, and may you all have a safe return." - Executive Director Dan Tucker
