My friend Bipin Lama has the most wonderful place to stay in Nepal. In the Langtang region and right on the Tamang Heritage Trek route. I have been doing yoga there for many years. Others are now staying at the tea house/ lodge in groups to do the same.

As we watched Whatcom County flood earlier this week, it's hard not to think that the rhetoric around COP26 is exactly the same as it has been for decades. In times of climate despair, it's important to remember that those making the headlines are often not the folks innovating on the front lines of the climate crisis. Communities worldwide are quietly adapting to realities that their families and neighbors face every day. If you're feeling down because of climate change, seek out a local project making a difference at home or in another corner of the globe. There are truly so many lessons we can learn from folks all over the world!! Are you inspired by grassroots actions working to mitigate and adapt to climate change? Is there a specific example that comes to mind? If so, let us know in the comments and help us share in some good news together!!

Photo: Students and community members on the beach at sunrise in Go Co, Vietnam. Thao, pictured center, decided to move back to Go Co after the program in 2019 to learn from the local community. She is now a program associate for Pacific Environment, advocating for ocean trash reduction, and in her spare time, she continues to promote community-driven solutions for development. She is currently working with folks in Ho Chi Minh City to think about asset-based community development in the Mekong Delta and continues to support farmers in central Vietnam to tell their own stories about their communities.

A big thank you to for our newest blog post and this picture of her gathering gooey duck clams as a child. We can think of nothing more illustrative of 'locavism' in the Pacific Northwest 🤩🤩 !! Make sure to check out her piece on Reimagining Responsible Travel (https://engageinplace.org/news-from-the-field/reimagining-responsible-travel) and our new program in the Salish Sea bioregion.

It's hard to believe it's been over two years since our students worked together in Vietnam!! But it has been inspiring and humbling to watch from the sidelines and see local communities redefine development and prioritize local livelihoods through asset-based initiatives.

We are SO excited to return to the field and learn from our friends and community leaders next year. 🤞 🤞 🤞 Check out our SE Asia and Vietnam programs, if you're interested in learning more. Link in the bio!!

There is no perfect solution to deal with the climate crisis but it is important for InPlace to address our own carbon footprint and the cost of study abroad on humanity and the global environment. But are carbon offsets enough to justify the cost of study abroad? Read our latest blog post for more - https://engageinplace.org/news-from-the-field/study-abroad-climate-offsets

How can we begin to grapple with the paradox of study abroad and climate change? Honestly, we don't have a perfect solution, but we are committed to start taking action by:

1. Investing in (local) climate offsets for all travel
2. Supporting partners and youth leaders in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change
3. Ask IF we should be traveling in the first place and if we decide to go create programs that are immersive and illustrative of slow travel
4. Innovate by creating domestic programs

Let us know if you have ideas on what we should do in thinking about the climate crisis! Check out our latest blog post to learn more: https://engageinplace.org/news-from-the-field/climatechange-studyabroad-responsibletravel

What should we do to address our role in the climate crisis to protect the beautiful communities we love?? A big question. We don't expect you to have the answer but let us know if you have ideas of what you would like to see us doing in the future.

We have been reflecting on our mission, its inevitable climate change impacts, and what it means for our planet and the communities we work alongside. Check out our blog (https://engageinplace.org/news-from-the-field/climate-change-mekong-delta) for a beautiful piece from one of our alum Bình on how a warming planet is affecting her town in the Mekong Delta.

Stay tuned for more as we continue to grapple with this ethical dilemma and decide what we should do going forward.
