Mosquitoes have long been a target for public health interventions. Now, biotech is taking aim at them in a new way: by genetically engineering “self-limiting” mosquitoes and releasing them into the environment. 🦟 🧬

The promise is compelling: fewer mosquitoes, fewer diseases, fewer problems.

But the real story is more complex. Bioengineered mosquitoes raise questions about how quickly genetic engineering is moving into environments and ecosystems - setting off ecosystem changes that can’t be undone.

More transparency about what’s actually in ultraprocessed food? We’re watching. 👀

With new changes to USDA regulations, many ultraprocessed foods will soon need to disclose their GMO ingredients with greater transparency.

The Center for Food Safety led the lawsuit against the USDA, arguing that the original exemption of highly processed ingredients meant many ultraprocessed foods containing GMO ingredients were going unlabeled - under current rules, around 70% of all GMO food ingredients are exempted from disclosure requirements.

In other words, eaters may finally be getting clearer, more accessible information about how their food is made.

We see a whooole lot of confusion online when it comes to understanding what GMOs are (and aren’t).

Here’s a roundup of the most common misconceptions floating around out there. If these are new to you, you’re not alone… but let’s set the record straight. 👀

1️⃣ GMOs are *not* the same as traditional selective breeding. The key difference is that GMOs change genetic structure in ways not organically possible.

2️⃣ Oversized or blemish-free produce isn’t automatically a GMO. That said, the photoshopped-looking produce we see in stores is also a result of industrial agriculture (and is worth paying attention to!).

3️⃣ GMOs don’t feed the world. 🙂‍↔️

Sugar may seem simple, but its supply chain isn't. 🙂‍↔️

Today, roughly half of the sugar produced in the U.S. comes from sugar beets... and about 95% of those sugar beets are genetically modified.

Beet sugar has historically been exempt from federal bioengineered labeling requirements, even though it's produced from genetically modified crops. 🫜

A recent federal court decision might be changing how USDA approaches that exemption in the future, but for now the existing rule remains in effect.

🇪🇺 ⚠️ Last week, the European Parliament approved new rules that will exempt many gene-edited crops from existing GMO regulations.

Under the new rules, many NGT (New Genomic Techniques) crops could enter the market without risk assessments, traceability, or labeling.

This vote raises major concerns around transparency, consumer choice, seed ownership, and corporate influence in the food system- not just for Europe, but for the planet.

Deregulation hands over more patents and profit to corporations like Bayer, BASF, Corteva, and Syngenta, granting them further control over what farmers are allowed to grow.
