We are seeking our next Executive Director!
For over 20 years, the Northwest Straits Foundation has protected and restored the Salish Sea, removing derelict fishing gear, revitalizing nearshore habitats, nurturing future conservation leaders, and building strong partnerships with Tribal nations, government agencies, NGOs, and coastal communities.

We’re looking for a strategic, collaborative, and visionary leader who will deepen community relationships, diversify funding, and advance the foundation’s critical mission.

Is this you? Is this someone you know? We'd love to hear from you!

Our tip for May is to use compost in your garden! ⭐️🪲⭐️
Compost is a nutrient-rich mixture of organic material that can be added to soil to support plant growth. In addition to its nutrient properties and waste reduction, it supports a range of other benefits related to soil health and water drainage.

Our newly acquired remotely operated vehicle (ROV) completed its maiden voyage this month!
Staff members Jason and Haley joined representatives from Oceanbotics and our partners at the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community for hands-on training with the new equipment. During the training, the team learned how to pilot the ROV and successfully located and retrieved a derelict crab pot containing 10 harvestable-size male Dungeness crabs, all of which were safely returned to the ocean.
Once training is complete, the ROV will help expand our derelict crab pot retrieval efforts by allowing crews to recover gear at depths beyond the limits of our dive teams.
This project is a partnership between the Northwest Straits Foundation, the Skagit and Island County Marine Resources Committees, and the Swinomish Department of Environmental Protection. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting new tool helps us recover more lost gear and protect marine life!

We had the best time connecting out on the water with so many of our partners last Friday for our Spring Cruise! Alongside dedicated friends from Washington State agencies, local Tribes, and regional nonprofits, days like this remind us exactly why we do what we do, and how lucky we are to collaborate with a community that cares just as much about the Salish Sea as we do.

During the cruise, our staff shared updates on several projects, including our work at Clark’s Point, Clayton Beach, and Lummi Island, as well as our statewide derelict gear removal program.

Huge thank you to everyone who joined us and brought such great energy! Special thanks to our event sponsors, San Juan Cruises, Queen Tide Oyster Co., and David Westerlund for making the space welcoming and educational.

Missed out? Make sure you're subscribed to our newsletter to catch more updates and our next adventure!

You may notice some new vegetation as you enter onto Clayton Beach - thanks to NWSF staff and volunteers we spent the morning planting dunegrass on the backshore for slope stability and to enhance the nearshore habitat with native vegetation!
We're looking for volunteers to join us again on Wednesday, May 13th from 9:00am - 12:00pm to finish planting and fencing off the area. Visit the following link to sign up for a fun and rewarding day! https://nwstraitsfoundation.salsalabs.org/claytondunegrass
Please keep out of the revegetated area while the fence is in place to protect the dunegrass🌱

A healthy layer of mulch can boost drainage, improve water retention, and keep your coastal landscape thriving through dry summer months. Mulch also helps prevent erosion, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature year-round.
Bonus: some of the best mulch is free - like fallen leaves or arborist chips!
Healthy soil makes for happy native plants!
Happy mulching!

Join us next Wednesday, May 6th at Clayton Beach for our first native vegetation planting event of the season! Dunegrass is a backshore vegetation hero! It anchors and helps trap sediment, reduces erosion, and protects shorelines from storms, all while creating habitat for coastal wildlife.
