Yesterday, our friends at Kitsap Bank celebrated a grand opening at the new 6th and Warren branch. At the invitation of WWU Foundation Board secretary and Kitsap Bank president and COO Tony George, WWU President Randhawa, and Chair of the WWU Foundation Sydney Hunsdale attended the grand opening of the new branch. Kitsap Bank owner Helen Langer Smith (VP) and her daughter Chairwoman Cindy Langer Smith were also in attendance. Kitsap is one of the largest woman-owned banks in the nation and celebrates its 118th anniversary this year. Congratulations to Tony and the Kitsap family!

A remarkable Fairhaven student, Ebon Oluchi (ze/zim) created three scholarships—the BIPOC Leadership Scholarship for someone who is a leader in BIPOC issues; the Resilience Scholarship for someone who exhibits personal strength and growth; and the Emotional Intelligence Scholarship, the first of its kind in the country, for someone who exhibits exceptional emotional intelligence. “I have always felt different and out of place everywhere I go. I wanted to help those, who like me, feel ‘other’ academically and socially,” says Oluchi. To read more go here:

Congratulations to WWU alumna Rena Priest ('05) for being selected as the 2021 Washington State Poet Laureate! Rena is a member of the Lummi Nation, making her the first Indigenous person to hold the position. She is the author of "Patriarchy Blues."

The American Book Award-winning poet and member of the Lhaq'temish (Lummi) Nation is the first Indigenous poet to assume the role.

We are so proud of WWU alumnus Trevor Torres ('12) of the U.S. Navy for his role in helping our armed forces fight COVID-19. He is "one of 139 service members assigned to Task Force Southeast – Jacksonville, the primary Department of Defense support organization for the Federal Emergency Management Agency in response to COVID-19.
