Alternative Humane Society https://www.alternativehumanesociety.com The Alternative Humane Society is an all-volunteer, nonprofit animal welfare organization serving Whatcom County, WA.

AHS has been helping animals and educating the public since 1977. We have no shelter, office, or paid staff. Our programs include Canine Foster & Adoption, Spay & Neuter Assistance, and Community Cats Information and Referral. Mission Statement: The Alternative Humane Society of Whatcom County is an all-volunteer, non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to improving the lives of dogs and cats and helping them find and stay in permanent loving homes. Meet Onyx! 🐾 | 4-Month-Old Husky / Pitbull / Shepherd Mix

Onyx is a bright, playful, and affectionate puppy on the lookout for his forever family! With his mix of breeds, he’s got equal parts brains, enthusiasm, and puppy charm.

Quick Stats

Age: 4 months

Weight: 36 lbs

Vaccination Status: Core vaccinations on-going

Breed: Husky / Pitbull Terrier / German Shepherd Mix

Personality: Friendly, eager, intelligent, food-motivated

Training Status: House, crate and exercise pen trained

Onyx considers every human and dog he passes on walks an immediate potential friend. He has previously lived with young children and is very interested in them on his walks. Some neighbourhood cats peak his interest but not enough to chase or do anything but look. He loves an engaging game of tug and thrives when his brain is working. He is a quick learner who responds well to treats during training. Onyx already knows an impressive number of commands including: Sit, Down, & Stay, Touch, Look, & Leave It and Drop It.

There are some opportunities for Onyx's growth going forward! Because Onyx is so excited to make friends, he is actively practicing keeping all four paws on the ground instead of jumping up to say hello. As well, Onyx has shown some resource guarding around his food and a new toy. His foster family is proactively working with a veterinary behaviorist to manage this safely and set him up for long-term success. His ideal adoptive family will be comfortable continuing this structured, positive-reinforcement plan.

Onyx will do best in an active, engaged home ready for the fun and responsibility of raising a smart, energetic puppy. A commitment to continuing his positive training routine and maintaining consistent boundaries will ensure this sweet boy grows into a confident, well-adjusted adult dog.

This lovely lady is Patchouli! She is a beautiful, five year old tuxedo with the silkiest fur and mightiest whiskers. You’ll often find her dreaming in a ray of sunshine or chirping at the birds from the window sill, and she loves snuggles and belly rubs. Patchouli is highly affectionate and often shows this by “grooming” you - AKA licking your arms, legs, head, and/or face if you let her! She also loves to climb around to the highest points in her environment to survey her kingdom. Bonus points if those high climbing spots are window-adjacent! Though she has lots of love to give and has a very friendly disposition towards everyone she meets, Patchouli is prone to overstimulation and will thrive in a lower traffic home without other animals or young children. Additionally, Patchouli has a urinary condition that is well managed with fluoxetine, so her adopter should be prepared to continue that prescription.

All of our cats come spayed or neutered, microchipped, and with age-appropriate vaccinations. Adult cats have an adoption fee of $150. FOSTERS NEEDED!

Due to the recent cruelty case dogs that came into Whatcom Humane Society, they are over capacity and we would like to help out by getting dog fosters.

You can help by becoming a foster for AHS and foster a dog that is currently up for adoption out of the shelter and into our care.

As a AHS foster, we provide all food, vet care and supplies for your foster until it is adopted.

Meet Sai! 🐾
Sai is looking for a foster home or, even better, his forever family! This handsome boy is about 3 years old, weighs approximately 65 pounds, and is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccines.
Sai is a big, goofy, affectionate dog who absolutely adores his people. He loves being close to his family, soaking up attention, and showing off his playful personality. Beneath that silly exterior is a loyal companion who forms strong bonds with the people he trusts.
To help Sai thrive, we're looking for a home that can meet his specific needs:
🐾 Sai would do best as an only pet, or potentially with a similar-sized dog after a slow, thoughtful introduction. He has a high prey drive and is not a good fit for homes with small animals.
🐾 A secure, fully fenced yard is important, as he can be reactive along fences and needs a safe space to exercise and decompress.
🐾 He can become overwhelmed in loud or chaotic environments and will do best in a calm, structured home.
🐾 Due to his strong herding instincts, he may try to herd running children by nipping at their heels. A home with older, dog-savvy children would be the best fit.
🐾 Sai will need an adopter who is committed to providing structure, exercise, ongoing training, and an understanding of his behavioral needs.
Despite these challenges, Sai is incredibly loving, loyal, and full of personality. With the right person or family, he has so much companionship, joy, and unconditional love to offer.

This sweet, well-mannered little lady has a calm, gentle personality and would love nothing more than a cozy home where she can enjoy her golden years surrounded by love.

Gidget is a quiet girl with a calm demeanor. Sweet Mira is still waiting to find his forever home! Mira is a one-and-a-half-year-old Tuxedo cat with a personality as bold as his markings! His love for his exercise wheel keeps him slender and athletic, and his unique eye markings make it look like he’s wearing mascara.

Mira is a rambunctious, affectionate boy who brings the party wherever he goes. With energy straight out of a Jim Carrey movie, he’s always ready to entertain! Call his name, and he’ll happily “yell” back at you before playing peek-a-boo from behind a wall. Sometimes, he’ll pause for a hilariously perplexed thousand-yard stare, as if pondering life’s biggest mysteries.

Mira has gastrointestinal sensitivities that are successfully managed with a specific diet, which he’ll need to continue in his new home. He also enjoys chewing on plastic, so supervision and keeping plastic out of reach are important. He’s clever and persistent when he wants something!

Mira needs a patient, loving home ready for his big personality and high energy. Plenty of enrichment, toys, and activities will help keep his busy mind engaged. He may be shy around new people and hide at first, so he’ll need time to settle in at his own pace.

He currently lives happily with other cats and has experience with dogs and children. However, he can become overstimulated and may scratch, so interactions should be supervised, especially with little ones. At bedtime, he loves snuggling beside his favorite person without taking over the whole bed. What a sweetheart!

Say hello to Bonbon!

At 3 months old this black and white fluffball with bright green eyes and kissable pink nose is growing up with every blink of the eye. Bonbon may have started out resembling a small sweet treat but he will surely become a big fluffy man with striking good looks and personality to match.

His bright kind demeanor shows in how he shares high value toys, snuggles and meals. His friends' comfort comes first but not at his expense. He is kind enough to give space but not timid by any means, running to greet the sound of group wet food, a fresh box of paper, rambunctious game of chase or a group purr pile. He is everyone's best friend.

Bonbon would thrive with a cat his own age or even a handful of years older as long as they like to run, play and cuddle. He loves the resident dogs in his foster home, seeking them out for snuggles regularly. Have a pup that wants some kitten besties?! Bonbon is ready for the task!

All of our cats come spayed or neutered, microchipped, and with their initial age-appropriate vaccinations. Kittens have an adoption fee of $200 each or $300 for a bonded pair. Kittens must be adopted in pairs unless there is another young, energetic cat in the home. Meet Bindi!

Bindi is a 6-month-old, approximately 20-pound bundle of love who is looking for her forever home.

This sweet girl has SO much personality and is quickly becoming an absolute joy to have around. Bindi is:

• A great cuddler

• An awesome sleeper

• Very affectionate and lovable

• Super curious

• Very smart

• Loves to run

• Loves people

• Good with other dogs

• Good with cats

• Loves giving kisses

• Full of personality

• Super cute!

Bindi is still a puppy, so she has a few things to work on. She is not fully potty trained yet, but she's getting better every day. She also needs some confidence-building and practice on a leash.

She has not shown any aggression toward people or other animals. She's also very good about people coming and going — she watches them but doesn't try to bolt out the door.

We haven't had Bindi around children yet, so we're not sure how she will do with kids.

Bindi will be spayed tomorrow, and we'll have a more accurate weight afterward. She's currently around 20 pounds.

Adoption requirement: Bindi's adopter will be required to sign her up for puppy obedience classes by the end of her 10-day home visit.She's a smart girl, and we're excited to see her continue learning and growing into the wonderful dog we know she can be.
