What a crowd - approximately 80 VFW comrades and Auxiliary members gathered at VFW Post 2681 in Marietta, Georgia, for the annual District Convention. It was a great success. Posts from across the District gathered to conduct business, share camaraderie, and much more.

Officers for 2026-27 were elected and installed, District-specific resolutions were voted on, and upcoming events were discussed.

Warrior Wednesday - John Brown

Name: John Brown

Current Position: Post Commander

VFW Post: 5376 (Calhoun, GA)

Service Branch: US Army National Guard (Active – AGR)

Years of Service: 15 years and counting

Rank: Sergeant First Class (E-7)

Military Occupational Specialty (MOS): 13F, Forward Observer

Eligibility for the VFW: Afghanistan Campaign, Armed Forces Expeditionary

Why are you actively involved in the VFW? Being able to build a strong community among veterans, service members, and their families, and to truly be a part of it, is something unmatched. Equally rewarding is helping connect veterans to the services and support they’ve earned and deserve. There’s nothing better than bringing people together for fellowship, sharing a meal, or giving back to the community we’re proud to serve.

Hobbies: Surprisingly, John still enjoys hiking, camping, and simply spending time outdoors. His other hobbies include stepping into whatever character his little boy requests, building things, and working around the house.

🇺🇸✍️ Announcing the 2026 VFW Department of Georgia Patriot’s Pen Winners! ✍️🇺🇸

Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars proudly sponsors the Patriot’s Pen youth essay competition, encouraging middle school students to examine America’s history, values, and their role in our nation’s future.

This year’s theme, “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”, inspired thoughtful, powerful reflections from students across Georgia.

Please join us in congratulating our Department winners:

🥇 1st Place: Sophia Montang Nominated by VFW Post 7402 (Buchanan, GA)

🥈 2nd Place: Kyler Harlan Nominated by VFW Post 5978 (Livonia, GA)

🥉 3rd Place: Zion Henry

We are incredibly proud of these outstanding young leaders for demonstrating a deep understanding of patriotism, citizenship, and service.

The Patriot’s Pen program continues to empower students in grades 6–8 to express their appreciation for our nation through the written word and compete for scholarship awards at the local, state, and national levels.

Congratulations to our winners, their families, teachers, and sponsoring Posts!

SPEAK UP! Don't Feed the Sharks!

🚨 ACTION ALERT: SPEAK UP FOR VETERANS TONIGHT!🚨

https://www.votervoice.net/GeorgiaVFW/Campaigns/134363/Respond

The Georgia State Senate Committee on Veterans, Military, and Homeland Security will meet to discuss HB 108, a bill that conflicts with existing federal law requiring VA accreditation for anyone assisting veterans with benefit claims.

Federal law is clear: individuals working with veterans on VA claims must be accredited by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. HB 108 fails to uphold that standard and opens the door to unaccredited actors operating in Georgia.

Georgia veterans deserve protection, not loopholes.

📢 Contact members of the committee tonight and early tomorrow morning.
📍 Ask them to stand with veterans and ensure Georgia law aligns with federal law.
🗓 Committee Meeting: 2/23/26 | 9:00 AM (450 CAP)

📊 Legislative Scorecard: How Are They Serving Georgia’s Veterans?

Our Legislative Scorecard tracks how Georgia’s state legislators are voting and leading on issues that directly impact veterans and their families, including bill sponsorship, key votes, and advocacy efforts under the Gold Dome.

This isn’t about politics. It’s about performance.

- Are they protecting veteran benefits?
- Are they standing up against claim sharks?
- Are they supporting tax relief and war veteran homes?

We’re monitoring the actions of every legislator, and the scorecard is updated regularly as the session progresses.

🔎 Stay informed. Stay engaged.

Tell our State Senators that we MUST protect our veterans. Vote NO on Georgia House Bill 108 & Senate Bill 73.

Tell our State Senators that we MUST protect our veterans. Vote NO on Georgia House Bill 108 & Senate Bill 73.

🚨 Georgia Veterans & Supporters: Take Action NOW 🚨

Georgia House Bill HB 108 and its identical companion SB 73 fail to protect veterans and instead invite exploitation.

📌 Four critical reasons to vote NO:
❌ No accreditation requirement
❌ No accountability
❌ No appropriate fee limits
❌ No defined, firm penalties for bad actors

Veterans earned their benefits through service and sacrifice. They deserve protection, not profit-driven loopholes.

👉 Take action today:
Visit GeorgiaVFW.org/hb108 to email your State Senator and, most importantly, CALL and demand a NO vote on HB 108 / SB 73.

📢 Share this post. Make the call. Protect Georgia’s Veterans.

Veterans First. Always.
