WasteMINZ WasteMINZ is the largest representative body of the waste,resource recovery and contaminated land management sector in New Zealand.

Formed in 1989, WasteMINZ has over 1500 members, from small operators through to councils and large companies. We are the authoritative voice on waste and resource recovery in New Zealand and seek to achieve ongoing and positive development of our industry through strengthening relationships, facilitating collaboration, knowledge sharing and championing the implementation of best practice standards. To bring National Volunteer Week to an end, we want to celebrate this year's WasteMINZ + ALGA Legend - Michelle Begbie.

Michelle Begbie is widely respected across Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia for her leadership in contaminated land regulation and policy, and she was nominated for her long-standing commitment to advancing good risk management practice. Michelle's impact lies not only in technical expertise but in her ability to connect people, translate science into practice, and leave a lasting legacy of shared knowledge and collaboration.

Did you know that WasteMINZ’s sector groups and working groups are all led by our members, who volunteer their time, effort, expertise and resources for the good of the sector, and ultimately, the good of the environment?

This National Volunteer Week, we’d like to acknowledge the chairs our of sector group steering committees! On top of their own BAU jobs, our chairs give us a lot of their time – leading meetings, providing expertise, being spokespeople for important topics and issues, and making sure the work gets done! They have a huge job, and we can’t thank them enough!

Ever wondered how aluminium cans can help reduce food waste too? 👀♻️

Cans for Kai, led by WasteMINZ member Phoenix Recycling Group in partnership with LegaSea NZ, is a smart example of how one form of resource recovery can power another.

Cans collected from community donation points are recycled, and the value generated supports the Kai Ika Project – helping redistribute seafood offcuts back into communities.

This week is National Volunteer Week 🌟, and we wanted to thank each and every one of our members who engage with us 🙌

WasteMINZ would not be what it is without the expertise, time, resources and skills of our members who support us to better the industry we are in, all for the good of the sector and the environment.

Thank you to those who are on a steering committee, working group, host webinars, provide feedback, present at our conferences and networking events, support with submission writing, and give their time to provide expertise and answer our questions!

Join us tomorrow, 17 June (5–7pm) at Tonkin + Taylor for the WasteMINZ Wellington Networking Event 🤝

The evening will feature two engaging presentations:

🎤 Chris Purchas (Tonkin + Taylor) will share insights from waste and circular economy projects across NZ, Australia, the Pacific and Asia, and what these lessons mean for tackling challenges here in Aotearoa.

🎤 Cole Leary (Kinley Plus) will offer a contractor’s perspective on working at Wellington’s Southern Landfill Extension, including practical problem‑solving around leachate management in a complex site environment 🛠️

With plenty of time for informal networking, it’s a great opportunity to connect and swap ideas with others across the sector.

Today is World Environment Day, and this year's theme is climate action. 🌱🌏🐝☀️♻️💧

"The planet doesn’t argue. It doesn’t negotiate. It sends signals—rising seas, raging wildfires, heatwaves, melting glaciers. We said 1.5°C was the limit. We are crossing it.

For decades, the world has heard the climate story—warnings, targets, distant deadlines. Too often, the response has been clouded by noise: delay, distraction, denial.

But listen closer now. Beneath the noise, another signal is rising. Solar panels stretch across rooftops. Wind turbines line the horizon. Cities are being redesigned for people. Forests are being replanted. Positive tipping points are taking root in every corner of the planet.

World Environment Day 2026 focuses on climate change—on the urgent signals the Earth is sending and the signals we choose to send back. UNEP’s global campaign calls on all of us to step in, to move further, to steer a world already in motion. The question is no longer if change comes, but how we guide it and how fast it happens."
