Role: Coordinator
Project: Toitū Aotea Community‑Led Development Programme

Location: Northern Aotea
Hours: 25 hours/week
Contract Length: Up to 30 June 2027 (with potential for 12-month extension)

Help us support community ideas, strengthen local leadership and coordinate the Community‑Led Development (CLD) programme in Northern Aotea.
We’re looking for someone organised, people‑focused and confident juggling a mix of community engagement, hui planning, project support and day‑to‑day co-ordination. If you enjoy talking with whānau, keeping things moving and helping community ideas grow from kōrero to action, this role is for you.

What is the CLD Programme?

The CLD Programme is a national kaupapa run by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). It supports communities to lead their own solutions, grow local leadership and strengthen wellbeing.

DIA partners with a small number of communities across Aotearoa and Ngāti Rehua-Ngātiwai ki Aotea is the partner and fundholder for Northern Aotea. We help our hāpori turn ideas into action, support collaborative mahi, provide guidance and ensure funding is used in ways that uplift our motu and our people

The CLD approach is simple: back local strengths, work together and support our hāpori to shape our own future.

About the role:

You’ll work alongside our CLD Project Lead to keep the programme running smoothly - supporting applicants, organising hui, maintaining relationships and helping projects move from idea to delivery. Some days you’ll be out in the community; other days you’ll be preparing comms, supporting funding applications or working with groups to progress local kaupapa.

-is organised and good at follow‑through
-communicates clearly and kindly
-can co-ordinate multiple moving parts
-is confident planning hui and supporting collaborative mahi

-cares about community wellbeing and mana whenua aspirations on Aotea

“It was not that long ago that we had really good abundance.”

For our Tū Mai Taonga Project Lead Makere Jenner, the ambition is to see that abundance return, so that for our tamariki and future generations, thriving ngahere and native taonga are simply their normal.

We recently welcomed RNZ Māori News to Aotea, where journalist Layla Bailey-McDowell and video journalist Nick Munro spent time with Makere and some of our wāhine toa trappers, hearing first-hand about the mahi we are doing to restore balance to our whenua.

In Loving Memory of Steven Walker

Hi everyone,

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the heartbreaking news of Steven Walker’s passing (Stewart Ngawaka’s youngest son, Robin Waka and Jan Piahana's nephew).
Steven sadly passed away at 2:19pm on Sunday, 20th of September.

There are no words to truly express the sadness and heartbreak felt by those who knew and loved him. We want to extend our deepest condolences to Steven’s family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched.

This message is being shared on behalf of his brothers, Sean Walker and Brad Walker, as we come together to remember Steven and honour his life.
Our thoughts, love, and deepest sympathies are with everyone grieving this devastating loss.

Rest peacefully, Steven. You will be deeply missed.
Will keep everyone posted about his at home service, where everyone will be invited to visit Steven at his home.

🌿 Hoe tū te waka: Ancient remedies for modern problems

Join Ngāwaka Salā Setiu for an interactive online wānanga exploring how whenua, whakapapa and belonging shape our wellbeing.

Together, participants will explore:

• Māori understandings of healing and restoration
• Our relationships with te moana, te ngahere, māra kai, whenua, marae and urupā
• How these insights can support counselling, pastoral care and community practice
• Our own sources of identity, connection and wellbeing
