⚠️Take action for our kōura – have your say

Consultation is now open on proposed new local rules for the kōura / rock lobster fishery around Aotea.

For some time, our community has raised concerns about declining kōura populations and increasing fishing pressure in our waters. Over the past year, Ngāti Rehua–Ngātiwai ki Aotea Trust and the Aotea / Great Barrier Local Board have worked alongside our local community to advocate for stronger local management of the fishery.

The proposed measures include:

🦞 Six recreational and customary-only kōura fishing areas, where commercial fishing would be excluded
🦞 A maximum legal size to help retain larger breeding kōura
🦞 Seasonal closures during kōura mating seasons
🦞 Reducing the recreational daily limit to two kōura per person
🦞 Removing the ability for recreational fishers to accumulate more than one daily limit

These measures are about helping protect our kōura populations and supporting a healthy, sustainable and fair fishery for our whānau and future generations.

Now we need our whānau and community to have your say.

Here's a great convo on Aotea FM with our project lead Makere Jenner (first interview on the show).
The Tū Mai Taonga team will be giving an update on feral cats on Friday 21st August at the Port Fitzroy Club if you'd like to hear about success in the north and the next phase of the mission whānau.
The 'Cat Taxi' is still in operation for August too so phone 0800 SAFE CAT to make a booking or report any missing pet cats.

The Return of Niho Taniwha to Aotea 🦎

We're excited to share this awesome story from Kea Kids News, capturing the return of Niho Taniwha to Aotea after almost 30 years in the care of Auckland Zoo.

This special homecoming was made possible through the collaboration of the Department of Conservation, Auckland Zoo, Ngāti Rehua–Ngātiwai ki Aotea Trust and Glenfern Sanctuary all working together to help restore this taonga species to its rightful home.

A huge thank you to Jaxton McGregor and the Kea Kids News team, who did an incredible job capturing this special moment. The story follows Nixie Davenport (Te Kura o Kaitoke), Taimania Wilson (Te Kura o Okiwi), Eddie Warner (Mulberry Grove School), winners of the Department of Conservation Aotea Kaitiaki Competition, alongside our own rangatahi Phoenix Beazley, as they helped welcome Niho Taniwha home.

This homecoming is a reflection of what can be achieved when iwi, conservation partners and our community work together to protect and restore our taonga species for future generations.

🌊 Help Build Aotea’s Future Commercial Diving Team

We’re looking for whānau who are interested in taking the next step towards a career in commercial diving and supporting the future health and wellbeing of our moana.

Ngāti Rehua–Ngātiwai ki Aotea Trust is seeking expressions of interest from whānau to undertake a fully funded ADAS Occupational SCUBA to 30m Qualification (Part 1).

We’re looking to support at least two people through this nationally recognised qualification, creating pathways into marine restoration, scientific research, commercial diving, marine inspection and other marine industries.

📅 Course starts: 21 September 2026
⏳ Duration: Six weeks
📍 Location: Huntly
🏠 Accommodation: Provided
🚗 Travel: Participants arrange and cover their own travel
🍽️ Meals and diving equipment: Participants are responsible for their own

There are a number of course prerequisites, but if you’re the right fit, we’ll support you to work towards meeting these where possible.

After visiting the ngahere native nursery, our whānau popped in next door to learn more about our Tū Mai Taonga project and the important work it’s doing to protect Aotea’s taonga species.

Take a few minutes to watch Reneeah explain how our feral cat traps work, the different baits we use, and how to safely set one. Tamariki got the chance to have a go at setting a trap themselves.
