In 1974, Sir Graeme Di**le, Sir Edmund Hillary, Murray Jones and Peter Hillary set out to make the first ascent of the Kaipo Wall.
Rising 4,000 feet above the Kaipo River on the remote West Coast of the South Island, the untouched granite wall was a serious test of courage, skill and resilience.
But the climb was only part of the challenge. The team travelled through remote river systems, crossed Lake McKerrow, reached the wall, climbed it in a single day, then endured a week trapped by snow and torrential rain in a snow cave.
Now, this climb has inspired one of our Move Mountains for Youth challenges.
You can take on the challenge your own way - walk it, run it, climb it or however you choose, while helping young people across Aotearoa build confidence, resilience and belief in what’s possible 🙌
