Today marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Week — and Jon’s ocean action is a reminder of something we see again and again: getting outside and doing something good for the places you love is good for you too.

Jon brought his two boys, aged 12 and 14, to our New Brighton beach clean-up earlier this year. “It was especially good for our boys,” he says. “They came away with a great feeling of wellbeing knowing they had volunteered their time to help a good cause. It’s meant they’ve since signed up to other voluntary causes because of this.” We are here for that ripple effect! 💙

Love this! We asked you to share what you do for the ocean for your chance to see Jack Johnson live — some of you shared small daily habits, others shared something much bigger, like Janie's.

Janie runs an education programme in the Western Bay of Plenty, and what she's achieved this year is quietly extraordinary — 1,500 students from 20 schools, engaged in dune restoration, w**d eradication, rubbish collection, and marine education. This is a sustained, community-wide effort to give young people a genuine connection to their local environment.

675 people can get a fair bit done. Taranaki just proved it 👏

The Big Clean saw 1.75 tonnes of rubbish collected between Waverley Beach and Waitara, with 11 schools, 24 businesses and 23 community groups getting involved.

We were proud to run this alongside Sustainable Coastlines and see so many locals turn up for their patch. Our teams are part of these communities too, so helping look after them means a lot to us.

A big thanks to everyone who gave their time and got stuck in. Have a flick through the results.

Thirty years of surfing will do that to you! 🏄

Bronson has been in and out of the ocean his whole life — and he's been giving back to it in a handful of meaningful ways. As well as cleaning up the beach directly, he spreads the word in other ways: talking to rangitahi about looking after the coastline, chatting with friends and family about keeping grey water and pollutants out of waterways, and reducing single-use plastics.

"The ocean gives us so much," he says. "I believe it's up to all of us to do our bit to protect it."

Hard to argue with that. Thanks Bronson — these are exactly the kind of actions this campaign is about.

🌊 It’s not too late to join the Big Clean! 🌊

There’s been some massive mahi happening along our coastline and across the Taranaki region this week, with schools, businesses, community groups and volunteers getting stuck in to care for the places we love. 💚

This photo from yesterday’s clean-up at Waiwhakaiho, with the team from Dialog Fitzroy, Sustainable Coastlines and Sustainable Taranaki is a great example of what can happen when we all pitch in! 🧤♻️

And tomorrow, Sunday 20 September, it’s your turn!

Spend a couple of hours giving your patch some love, then come along to the East End Surf Lifesaving Club from 2pm for the Big Clean community celebration. 🎉

There’ll be food, drinks, music, games, educational activities and plenty of opportunity to connect with others who care about our incredible Taranaki environment.

🐧 Ngā Motu Marine Society will be there too! Come and visit our information stall, meet the team and find out more about our work, and how you can support us through membership, volunteering or donations.
