Hear from Dr Emma Best - Paediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist at Starship
For 18 winters, Dr Emma Best has cared for vulnerable children at Starship - and she knows just how tough this time of year can be.

“Winter brings a sharp rise in respiratory infections, and for some children, even a common virus can become life-threatening,” she says.

Newborns, premature babies, and children with underlying conditions are most at risk — often needing oxygen, intensive care, or specialised treatment.

With winter pressure building, your support helps ensure Starship can continue to provide the latest life-saving care to children across New Zealand.

Let’s bake for Starship! The Starship Big Bake Off is open to everyone – and every cake baked, dollar donated, and post shared helps support the thousands of children who rely on Starship every year.

This is a clip from the Starship Staff Bake Off - 18 incredible entries from staff across the hospital, an amazing atmosphere, and some seriously impressive baking.

We were joined by judges TV host Hilary Barry and Al Brown New Zealand Chef, alongside Starship GM Jess Patten, who had the tough job of helping select winners from an outstanding field.

For some children, a cold is never “just a cold.”
For babies with tiny lungs, and for children like Patricia, it can escalate quickly — becoming serious, even life-threatening.

At Starship, we see this every year, as children arrive critically ill and in urgent need of specialist care.

Your support helps ensure they get the best possible care, when it matters most.

There was plenty of sweetness at Starship this week as staff from across the hospital put their baking talents on display for the annual workplace Starship Bake Off.

From beautifully decorated cakes to crowd-pleasing cupcakes, the creativity and care behind every entry was extraordinary. Judging the competition was no easy task for TV host Hilary Barry celebrated Al Brown New Zealand Chef and Starship Hospital GM Jess Patten.

A special congratulations to Natalie from the Emergency Department, whose delicious lemon curd cupcakes took out first place.

Thank you to everyone who baked, donated, volunteered and supported the bake sale. Special thanks to NZMA for their generous contribution of beautiful cakes and to Allergywise for donating 400 slices.

At Starship, baking is about more than sweet treats. It’s a simple act of generosity that brings people together and reflects the care, kindness and community spirit that helps make Starship such a special place for our children and whānau.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who made the day such a success. 💙
