WE ARE SO PROUD OF OUR CHAIR PROFESSOR JACOBA MATAPO. Breaking glass ceilings.

Your culture makes up so much of who you are. So why is it not embedded into the foundations of education?
That's exactly the question Professor Jacoba Matapo has spent 25 years answering. 👉 https://aut.ac/4ySn5tf
This year, she became the world's first Pacific Professor of Pacific Early Childhood Education. A title that has been decades in the making. Built on the shoulders of a group of pioneering Pacific matua who first paved the way for ECE grounded in Indigenous Pacific values, spirituality, language and identity.
Like many Pacific ECE communities, she aspires for every Pacific child across Aotearoa to experience their language, culture and identity as an integral part of the curriculum.
AUT is the only New Zealand university offering a Bachelor of Education in Teaching with a Pacific specialisation. And with Professor Matapo leading the way, we believe Aotearoa has the opportunity to become a global hub for Pacific early childhood education.

"O le tatou va’a e fau fa’atasi” — our boat is built together.

This proverb speaks to the heart of how we work. Nothing meaningful is built alone. When we serve our Pasifika communities, we do it through relationship, partnership, and collective strength.

North Harbour Pasifika Hauora Collective is proud to be part of Pou Pasifika, a national movement co-designed by and for Pasifika youth development workers across Aotearoa.

For too long, youth workers have carried our young people, families, churches, schools, clubs and communities, often without being properly recognised, valued, or compensated for the depth of the work they do. They are not babysitters. They are mentors, cultural navigators, advocates, safe spaces, connectors, and often the first people our young people turn to when they need support.

Alongside Harbour Sport, we are grateful to be part of the Auckland Action Team and to help strengthen the North Harbour voice in this kaupapa. We are also proud to bring others on the journey, including our Hibiscus Tuakana representative Heleina from the Coast, and our sister Moe from Mahu Vision Trust in Warkworth.

Often, the Harbour region is overlooked when it comes to Pasifika investment and resourcing because our population is not seen in the same way as South Auckland. But our communities are here. Our young people are here. Our families are here. And the latest census data shows that the Pacific population across the North Harbour region continues to matter and must be seen.

This is why collective movements like Pou Pasifika are so important. They remind us that every part of the vā matters — South, West, Central, North, the Coast, Warkworth and beyond.

As North Harbour Pasifika Hauora Collective, we will continue to build the boat together with those who are already serving our people on the ground.

Because when our youth workers are valued, supported and strengthened, our young people and families thrive.

Mana Moana Football Collective applications are now open!🌺⚽

Mana Moana is a Pasifika girls football leadership programme created to strengthen belonging, confidence, leadership, and connection in football spaces.

Led by Football Fern Malia Steinmetz alongside Pasifika Sisters in Sport and Northern Region Football, the programme brings together Pasifika girls aged 14–17 from across Auckland to connect through culture, leadership, and football.

Over 6 months, participants will take part in:
⚽ Leadership workshops
⚽ Collective sessions
⚽ Talanoa and storytelling
⚽ Mentorship and connection
⚽ Exploring football pathways

Because football should be more than performance, it should be a place where our girls feel seen, valued, connected, and proud of who they are.

If you know a Pasifika girl currently playing football who would benefit from this space, encourage them to apply.

Spots are limited, applications close soon.

Back April 7th when we were able to host our 5th year of Nth Harbour Pasifika Youth Sports Day, in partnership with Harbour Sport SportSpasifik. We look forward to 2027 stronger and better and with our theme, CULTURE. More prizes and more fun.

✨ Tuesday After Easter Harbour Pasifika Youth Sports Day — 5 Years Strong! ✨
What started as a simple initiative — creating a free, joyful space for our Harbour Pasifika youth to play, connect, and just be themselves — has grown into a beautiful annual tradition. Five years on, the energy, the laughter.

A massive thank you to our incredible sponsors who make this day possible: New World Long Bay, PAK'nSAVE Albany, and AUT Office of Pasifika Advancement. Your support helps keep this event free.

And to the teams behind it all — Harbour Sport’s Sports Pasifik team and the North Harbour Pasifika Hauora Collective — your heart for our community and our young people has made this all possible.

Here’s to another year of movement, culture, and connection for our Pasifika youth.
Fa’afetai, malo ‘aupito, vinaka vakalevu — see you again next year! THEME for 2027 CULTURE 🌺🏉🌊

✨ Sometimes all it takes is one caring adult to change the direction of a young person’s life. ✨

We’re looking for big sisters, big brothers, mentors, or simply kind-hearted people willing to walk alongside our rangatahi/talavou/youth on their journey.

Right now, many of our organisations need mentors to refer our young people to, but there’s a shortage. That’s where you come in. 💙

If you can spare just 2–3 hours a week, you could be the steady voice, the safe space, or the encouragement that helps a young person believe in themselves again.

All it takes is 2–3 minutes to scan the QR code and fill in the form.

What you’ll gain:

The joy of making a real difference

A lifelong friendship

The reward of serving our youth

Valuable experience for your CV

Your time could be the gift that changes a life. 💫
Must be 18yrs+, some requirements and FULL TRAINING PROVIDED.

Vinaka (Thank you).
