Pacific leaders launched the "Blue Pacific Prosperity" initiative during the COP28 Climate Conference in Dubai, outlining three goals: ocean protection, healthy populations, and accessible finance. The initiative aims to protect almost a third of the Pacific's ocean.

Pacific leaders addressed the need for new funding sources, and emphasised their focus for leveraging private sector involvement.

At the launch, the Bezos Earth Fund pledged $100,000, and the Global Environment Facility committed an additional $125 million.

Pacific Community's director of partnerships Karena Lyons said leaders have taken an innovative approach to the problem.

"They're showing the world that it's not good enough to sit around and talk about climate financing or development financing," she said.

"We actually have to be entrepreneurial and innovative and try to strategically use the capabilities that we have."
