Recorded Music New Zealand welcomes the Government’s announcement it is moving to bolster copyright law and protect some of New Zealand’s most iconic music for longer. The changes will extend copyright term from the current 50 to 70 years, bringing New Zealand’s law into line with global standards.

Recorded Music NZ CEO Jo Oliver says –

“Copyright law powers the music industry and enables artists to be paid for their work. It's great news that this government is finally fixing the unfair anomaly in New Zealand copyright law and giving New Zealand artists and rights holders the same protection as their overseas counterparts. It is crucial that the change is legislated as soon as possible, to ensure our musical heritage is protected and preserved for years to come.”

Rest in Peace Dame Jools 🖤

We are deeply saddened by the news that beloved artist and entertainer Jools Topp passed away on Saturday, in the company of whānau and after a long journey living with breast cancer

Jools was one half of Aotearoa country music trailblazers Topp Twins, alongside her sister Dame Lynda Topp. The much-loved duo have brought a tongue-in-cheek but deeply political energy to their music and performance over the course of their incredible shared career, whether busking on busy street corners or packing out big venues 🎶

An ongoing inspiration to their fans, community and generations of artists alike, the Topp Twins were celebrated at the Country Music Honours awards in Gore on Friday night, with the second-ever Country Music Honour for Contribution to Country Music 🌟

Having been active since the early-1980s, The Topp Twins were also one of the first local acts to be inducted into Te Whare Taonga Puoro o Aotearoa | NZ Music Hall of Fame, in 2008

Ko te toa o Te Whare Taonga Puoro o Aotearoa ko... Che-Fu The Musician ka mutu pea! 💥💥

Recorded Music NZ is thrilled to announce that Aotearoa hip hop legend Che Ness a.k.a Che Fu will be inducted into Te Whare Taonga Puoro o Aotearoa | NZ Music Hall of Fame at the 2026 Aotearoa Music Awards on Thursday 28 May at The Civic in Tāmaki Makaurau. The event will feature a live medley performance by Che and his band The Kratez, of some of the artist’s most iconic tracks 🌟
