Generative AI is moving fast and we need government and political parties to get on board with our music sector - to protect human artistry and maintain robust copyright law ©️

In Australia some AI companies are pushing government to weaken copyright law to suit their business model. Artists and creatives should not be sidelined in favour of AI development. Recorded Music NZ is calling on government and political parties in Aotearoa to commit to a responsible approach that maintains robust copyright law, supports innovation and strengthens the contribution music makes to our economy, culture and identity. Let’s ensure that the people behind New Zealand's music remain part of its future 🎶

Streaming fraud undermines trust, weakens music markets and harms creators.

We support the Streaming Integrity Initiative (SII) announced by IFPI and supported by a wide range of our rights holder members.

SII is a commitment to combat streaming fraud and protect artists, songwriters and fans from its harm and establishes a set of baseline practices for industry players to help prevent, detect and respond to streaming fraud.

Recorded Music NZ has led the development of a New Zealand Music Industry Manifesto, released today ahead of the 2026 General Election

The NZ music industry contributes nearly $1 billion to GDP and builds this country’s brand in international markets more effectively than any advertising campaign. Our music is a source of pride and inspiration for audiences across Aotearoa 💓 reflecting our unique cultural identity

This election year, we are asking government and political parties to commit to targeted action to help our industry reach its potential 📣

We have seven key asks for government action:

✔️ Music Industry Growth Strategy – Recognise music as a growth industry alongside screen and games
✔️ Copyright Law & AI Regulation – Hold the line and protect artists’ rights to choose how their work is used
✔️ Music Infrastructure & Artist Development – Aotearoa is bursting with musical talent but the infrastructure needs support
✔️ Export: Supercharge Growth – Treat music export with the strategic seriousness applied to primary industries
✔️ Māori Music Development – Our unique offering to the world
✔️ Government Levers: Discoverability – Use existing tools to amplify Aotearoa music
✔️ Music Education – The talent pipeline begins in the classroom

The Manifesto was created in collaboration with APRA AMCOS NZ, NZ Music Commission and a cohort of industry partners 🙏

Tūī-winning indie folk artist MEL PARSONS entered the Top 40 Albums Chart at #1 on Friday, with her seventh studio album, Castle Hill – the artist’s first-ever Top 40 #1 album 🌟

Parsons becomes just the second act from Aotearoa to land a Top 40 #1 this year 💅 SIX60 also achieved the feat in February, with Right Here Right Now

Castle Hill also leads the Top 20 Aotearoa Albums Chart – another first for the hard-working Parsons, who has previously peaked on the Chart at #2 with Sabotage (2024) and Slow Burn (2022) 📈

Recorded in the powerfully picturesque South Island high country station of the same name (Castle Hill / Kura Tāwhiti), the LP was produced by Josh Logan and recorded live in a single room with longtime bandmates Aaron Stewart (bass) and Jed Parsons (drums), alongside guitarist Ben King (Goldenhorse, Grand Rapids) 🔥🔥🔥

The 2026 Pacific Music Awards - NZ winners were revealed last night, at an epic event at the Due Drop Centre in Manukau 🙌

Recorded Music was proud to celebrate the finalists for Te Tino Pukaemi Moana Nui a Kiwa o te Tau | Best Pacific Music Album, and to present this year's Tūī to Scribe for his 2025 swan song album Scribe Is Dead 🪦

The Tūī was presented by last year's category winner Jordyn with a Why and collected by Scribe Is Dead co-producer, Zac Harding a.k.a Infectiouss. The formalities were followed by a surprise performance by none other than Scribe himself that brought the house down 🔥🔥
