A reminder that low cost counselling exists in Tāmaki Makaurau šŸ™ŒšŸ¾

The Auckland Women’s Centre is committed to providing safe, confidential, affordable and effective counselling. We welcome everyone who is a woman, Takatāpui, and our non-binary whānau - those of us who feel comfortable in women’s spaces. We have a diverse range of counsellors, including gender-queer practitioners, come and kōrero with us!

Our low cost sessions are with student counsellors who are working towards their qualifications and receive professional supervision. They can support people with things including relationships, navigating new identities, gender and sexuality, parenting, and some mental health concerns.

Because they’re still in training, student counselling isn’t the right fit for every situation - and we think it’s important to be upfront about that. Some conditions or situations are better supported by a registered counsellor or another organisation.

That’s why we ask you to complete a referral form first, followed by a quick phone call with some standard questions. It helps us check whether working with a student counsellor is the right fit for you. If another service would better suit your needs, we’ll do our best to recommend one.

Sessions are available in person or online, weekdays between 9am–3pm. You can access six weekly counselling sessions for $10–$40 per appointment - you choose what you pay

Migrant Women’s Self Defence šŸ‘ŠšŸ½

A free, fun supportive workshop for migrant women (16+) to learn and practice mental, verbal and physical techniques

The teaching is based on research about what works against a bigger, stronger attacker. Rather than a list of do’s and don’ts, this course will give you more options, skills and confidence to assert your boundaries and stay safe in a range of situations relevant to women and gender minorities’ lives. This includes harassment from strangers in public, people we know and in our relationships. It will also give you more ideas for where to find support and how to support others 🧔

All women and non-binary people of all abilities and fitness levels warmly welcome.

It is really easy to spend a lot of our emotional labour looking after others. So much so, that caring for ourselves can start to feel like a luxury.

This one day workshop is a chance to press pause and redirect some of that energy ā˜€ļø

Through mindfulness, gentle movement, journaling and compassionate boundary setting, you'll leave with practical tools to support yourself

We would love to have you join us!

We're thrilled to announce our next kōrero star is journalist, musical arts laureate and absolute taonga Moana Maniapoto MNZM. She's an award-winning interviewer – but it's now her turn to be interviewee (talking with the wonderful Stacey Morrison). If you were lucky enough to see Moana interview Prof Margaret Mutu, you'll know she combines humour (and song!) with hard-hitting insight.

Her life is fascinating - plus there's no one better to guide us through the upcoming tricky, thorny and vital election season while we continue to suffer under the current deliberately racist, misogynist & environmentally destructive government.

Join us for a refreshing, smart & savvy evening, an oasis in the midst of the political brawl, to reenergise us for the weeks ahead. Bring your friends - they'll thank you for it! 7pm, Tuesday 25 August.

Nothing like introducing yourself to a few thousand people… šŸ”„

Kia ora! I’m Brie, the new Social Media Lead at Auckland Women’s Centre

I’m an actor, director and social media strategist. I’ve always been fascinated by the stories we tell, the ones we’re told and the ones we carry about ourselves. I think stories are one of the most powerful ways we make sense of the world and connect with each other 🌈

It is such a privilege to join Te Wahi Wahine o Tamaki Makaurau! I’m grateful to be here! Low cost counselling, advocacy, education and community- it’s such a special community to be part of and I feel lucky to help tell their stories and connect more women and non binary people with the support that’s available 🩷
