Shoutout to these wonderful coastguard Waiheke Island crew! They are doing the “BIG SWIM” to save lives on the water. Please look their names up (see link in comments ) and offer them support. Sarah Wiggins, Meekaeel Barnabas, John Campbell Percy, Maria Heer (and Maria’s even dragged her son in law in Hayden Ringrose! Thanks so much team Waiheke!

It’s easy to not notice what goes on behind the scenes - in order to save lives, and keep us all safe on the water. Last weekend 500 wonderful brave swimmers crossed the harbour from Rangi to St Heliers - they were supported by about 50 volunteers collaborating across services - coastguard, life saving, harbour master, race officials, multiple communication devices, paddle boarders, support swimmers, race patrol on jet skis, and Waka ama to welcome swimmers…. No doubt more! We were lucky enough to be part of the crew along with Coastguard Maraetai. What a pleasure !

If you live on Waiheke - boatie or otherwise - you can take shelter at the Ostend Hall this evening. Open at least from 9pm. Stay safe, be cautious - please don’t wait till you are actually afraid for your life or safety to take action.
