With a bang to start World Ocean Day, we had the pleasure of opening our 2026 Kōura Dive Survey yesterday at Kennedy Point, Te Motu Arai Roa with a mihi whakatau. The day was exciting and thrilling to say the least, with the sky opening up sunshine for the rest of the day.

The KDS wouldn’t be possible without our team of volunteer divers, freedivers, skippers, and whānau who make our job worth it. We'd like to give a big ngā mihi nui to all those involved. Happy World Ocean Day!

We also thank, The Lou and Iris Fisher Trust, WWF New Zealand, The Tindall Foundation, Sargood Bequest & Mazda Foundation and Foundation North for supporting this year’s survey alongside our supplier partners Epic Dive & Scuba, Dive Doctor, Global Dive, Sealink, Fullers360 & Kelly Tarlton's Marine Wildlife Trust.

The excitement for this year’s Kōura Dive Survey has been building all week—even if the P**i team was looking at the weather forecasts through rose-colored glasses!

After chatting with the skippers last night and re-checking the marine forecast, we’ve decided to shift the opening Mihi Whakatau and our first day in the water to Sunday, 7 June. The swell, wind, and visibility are looking much better for Sunday (and a drier sky always helps!).

The Details:

📅 When: Sunday, 7 June at 8:00 AM

📍 Where: Waiheke Marina Carpark

We can't wait to see you all there!

Looking ahead: Our aim is to strengthen our relationship with our dive partners Epic Scuba for youth snorkelling, scuba diving and freediving to ensure our divers are confident and willing to support our regenerative dive actions across all P**i - projects. To train and engage more and up-hold our kaupapa across the board.

The Waiheke Marine Project Annual Report 2025 shares some of the key impacts in numbers and connections from the project year 1 October 2024 – 30 September 2025. This slide highlights the Beach Clean data for 2025.

Looking ahead: Our aim for 2025/26 is to continue delivering regular beach clean-ups, with a focus on at least one per month, alongside targeted cleans following major storm events. We aim to grow community participation by increasing volunteer numbers at each event and encouraging a wide range of engagement from locals, mana whenua, youth, tourists, and local businesses. We also seek to strengthen our online presence through social media to build greater awareness and traction for this p**i. Additionally, we plan to use the data collected from our clean-ups to support advocacy efforts that address marine pollution at its source and contribute to the long-term protection of local marine ecosystems. Where possible, we would also love to organise dive clean-ups.

Looking forward to the 2025/6 season, we will begin shifting our focus from rimurimu restoration to the maintenance of our 50m2 test zone at Enclosure Bay. Continued monitoring through our observational dive programme will help us develop our test zone to possible new areas within Enclosure Bay strengthening relationships with our rangatahi, mana whenua, schools, and broader community, whilst still displaying our sense of mātauranga Māori, the Kelp Gardeners p**i can continue to thrive and develop as a ppractical expression of kaitiakitanga.

Looking ahead: The project plans to continue supporting surveillance and communication efforts into 2026 so that removal programmes will have improved information. Retrieving the PAR sensor data is expected to help with the understanding of any changes in behaviour such as the reduction or increase in biomass or incursions in new areas.

The Waiheke Marine Project Annual Report 2025 shares some of the key impacts in numbers and connections from the project year 1 October 2024 – 30 September 2025. This slide highlights the Kōura Dive Survey data for 2025.

Looking ahead, 2025 marked the fifth season running for the Kōura Dive Survey. This is a significant milestone for the WMP and represents a growing data set that contributes to effective decision-making at all scales. We are currently looking for further multi-year funding opportunities to enable the longevity of the KDS. Our initial goal is to secure funding to reach a full life-cycle of kōura (7 years), with the longer-term aspiration of developing a local data set that can mirror the 20+ year data sets enabled within the Leigh Marine Reserve. We continue to amplify the importance of active habitat restoration as the key driver for kōura recruitment and succession in Tīkapa Moana.

Saturday, 16th May, a group of volunteer regen divers will be in the water at Enclosure Bay from 9 am for a training session to familiarise ourselves with what is expected for this year's Koura Dive Survey happening every weekend in June.

A friendly reminder to boaties and water users: please keep an eye out for blue-and-white diving flags and/or orange floats indicating divers/snorkelers in the water, and take extra care when moving through and around the bay.

Ngā mihi, Waiheke Marine Project!
