What's being proposed for Kenepuru Sound, and what could it mean for animals and the environment?

A proposal to establish an intensive cattle feedlot in the Marlborough Sounds is raising important questions about animal welfare, environmental protection and local infrastructure.

The proposed operation would see cattle housed in intensive barn systems in one of Aotearoa's most beautiful and ecologically significant regions.

There are serious questions that deserve answers:
- How would cattle welfare be protected in an intensive farming environment?
- What impact could the operation have on local waterways, wildlife and marine ecosystems?
- How would animal waste be managed?
- What additional pressure could transporting cattle, feed and supplies place on the region's already challenging roads?

A petition is calling on Parliament to investigate these concerns through a formal inquiry.
Whatever your views on farming, decisions with potentially significant consequences for animals, communities and the environment deserve proper scrutiny.

We encourage everyone concerned about this proposal to read the petition, consider the issues and make their views heard.

Thinking about who to vote for in this election, and how the political parties align with your values?
Check out SAFE's scorecard. Safe sent a survey to all 17 parties registered in the general election with eleven questions, covering issues including factory farming, farrowing crates, caged hens, intensive winter grazing, live animal export, rodeo, food system reform and independent oversight of animal welfare. The scorecard brings together those responses together, giving voters a clear picture of where parties stand.

Today, we’re keeping it simple.

This year for Egg Free Day, we’re challenging Aotearoa to go one whole day without eggs.

Skip the eggs at breakfast. Check the label on that biscuit. Try vegan mayo at lunch. Choose egg-free noodles for dinner. Discover what happens when you start noticing just how many places eggs turn up, and how easy they can be to replace.

You don’t need to have all the answers, and you don’t need a perfectly stocked vegan pantry: just give us one day.

Today is World Octopus Day.

Octopuses are extraordinary animals. They can taste with their arms, sense light through their skin, solve puzzles, use tools and recognise individual people. They are curious, intelligent individuals, adapted to explore complex underwater environments.

Yet here in Aotearoa, research into farming octopuses is already underway, with $1 million in public funding provided to the University of Auckland.

Octopus farming would mean confining these solitary, inquisitive animals in artificial environments for one purpose: eventually killing them for food.

The good news is that commercial octopus farming hasn’t begun here yet. We have an opportunity to stop it before it starts.

More than 17,000 people have already signed the petition calling for a ban on octopus farming in New Zealand, and opposition is growing.

This World Octopus Day, let’s celebrate these remarkable animals by keeping them where they belong: wild in our oceans, not farmed in tanks.

One of the reasons vegans don't eat eggs is male chicks.

In the egg industry, male chicks cannot lay eggs and are not the breeds raised efficiently for meat. That means they have historically been treated as having no commercial value.
Around the world, billions of newly hatched male chicks are killed each year, often within their first day of life. Either by gassing or by being ground up alive. Yes. In New Zealand, maceration is still an explicitly permitted method for killing day-old chicks, along with gas. MPI describes maceration as an “instantaneous fragmentation” method.

This is one of the hidden realities behind egg production.
They are tiny, vulnerable, sentient animals whose only “wrong” is being born male.
