From the front lines of Syria to communities affected by conflict in Gaza, Ukraine, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and Sudan, ReliefAid founder Mike Seawright has spent more than a decade delivering life-saving humanitarian aid to people who need it most.

The need for home repairs in Ukraine remains urgent.

As frontlines shift families are still living in damaged homes, makeshift shelters, or buildings that are unsafe and unable to protect them from the elements.

ReliefAid teams are working alongside isolated communities to deliver vital building repair materials, helping families make their homes safer, warmer, and more liveable.
Since October last year, we have supported over 478 households with essential repair materials, but the need continues to grow as the war drags on.

A safe home provides security, dignity, and a place for families to begin rebuilding their lives after facing immense hardship.

International volunteer week is here, and we want to take this opportunity to thank every single one of our volunteers, interns and pro-bono partners who have donated their time, energy and skills to help people in some of the world’s most difficult living conditions. We could not be as fast, efficient and effective if it were not for the kindness, generosity and humanity of the people who chose to work with us.

We also want to give a special shout out to one volunteer in particular, our Communications Director Anne Bulley who has worked pro-bono for ReliefAid for an entire decade!

Here at ReliefAid, we know how important hope is. We see it come through our desks in New Zealand every single day, from our teams in Gaza, Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, and Lebanon who work alongside their communities.

These moments - children with school supplies, families collecting clean water, neighbours helping one another with boxes and building materials, are reminders that even during immense hardship, hope and humanity still exists.

All of these images are captured by our own teams, giving you a real and honest insight into the communities you are supporting. These are moments of connection between people here in New Zealand and families living through crises on the other side of the world.

“Thank you; you were by our side last year, and you have not left us this year either.”

Before the war, Sharifah Ahmed never imagined her home in Lebanon would become a shelter for so many of her family.

Today, she is hosting her elderly father, her brother, his wife, and their six children after they were forced to flee escalating violence in Lebanon. Their home was too damaged to return to. His workshop, their source of income, was destroyed.

Now, multiple families are sharing one small space, trying to survive without stable work, income, or certainty about the future.

“This war is very difficult,” Sharifah says. “But we have to endure it.”

Families like Sharifah’s have received food parcels from ReliefAid, providing support during an incredibly difficult time.

Across Lebanon, thousands of families are facing displacement, loss, and uncertainty.

Our colleague and friend Ahmed in Gaza shared a powerful story with us yesterday…

“I took this photo not long before the war.
Back then this was a city filled with life and people.
Now walking through these streets,
All you see is rubble, ash and the remains of homes.”

“The colours of the city have faded away”

It’s difficult for many of us to understand just how drastically life has changed for people in Gaza. Families who were once thriving in a vibrant city are now struggling for the basics.

Last weekend, swimmers from around the world took part in the inaugural World Peace Swim, and for the first time, New Zealand (and ReliefAid) joined in. 🌊

The Optimist Swim Group from Ōhope entered the water alongside swimmers from 18 countries, carrying with them a message of peace, compassion, and solidarity. Founded 10 years ago to support families living through conflict, many of the group’s original members still swim together weekly and continue to support ReliefAid’s humanitarian work today.

For ReliefAid’s Communications Director Anne Bulley, an original Optimist member, the swim was also a reminder of the stark contrast between the peaceful waters of Aotearoa and the beaches of Gaza, where children can no longer safely swim, play, or simply enjoy being near the sea.

After seeing photos from the swim, our friend and colleague Ahmad sent us this message from Gaza:

“Seeing the photos made my heart smile, they’re so beautiful and full of peace and life ❤️”

“Life in Gaza can make the world feel very small sometimes. Then I see something like this happening on a beach in New Zealand and I’m reminded that kindness travels much further than we think.”

“This was a reminder that there are still people in this world who genuinely show up for peace, not because they have to, but because they care.”

His words are a powerful reminder that even from thousands of kilometres away, small acts of compassion matter. They are seen. They are felt. And they give people hope.
