Through rebuilding connections between our people and our food, we work to champion and demonstrate a regenerative local food system that supports climate change mitigation, urban resilience and community wellbeing. We do this by connecting children with food production and natural systems, training adults in regenerative food growing, and supporting people affected by mental health issues or inte

llectual disability to garden for therapy. Situated on 1.7 hectares (4.5 acres) of council-owned land, as part of Hukanui Reserve, Kelmarna is a busy, small farm, largely tucked away behind rows of houses on Hukanui Crescent and Kelmarna Avenue. On our north-facing slopes you will find vegetable beds, a food forest, bee hives, layer hens, our community composting hub Soil Factory, and Jafa, a Welsh Timor pony. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the gardens seven days a week, and can buy our produce from the Farm Shop on Wednesdays (10am - 4pm) and Saturdays (9am - 12pm). Check out our website for more information about what happens here, and how you can get involved.

Today, we’re launching Kelmarna’s very first Annual Appeal 🌱

A generous supporter is matching every dollar you give (up to $50,000!) between now and the end of our campaign, which means your support right now goes twice as far.

Your donation keeps Kelmarna’s organic farm, community programmes, therapeutic gardening, and school education thriving in the heart of Tāmaki Makaurau. If you’re not in a position to give—sharing this appeal, staying connected, and championing our work are all meaningful ways to support Kelmarna.

For decades, Kelmarna has been nurturing connections between people, food, and the land. With your support, we can continue creating a thriving, regenerative future for years to come.

This week in the māra we harvested our taputini kūmara, which was a careful and joyous process, as we save the best to plant as seed next season and share some with our CSA customers. This seed was originally from Kōanga, which we have been saving ourselves now for the last few years.

We planted this kūmara at the bottom of our market garden, but because it was a wetter spot, it didn’t grow as well as we had hoped. We'll integrate these learnings for next season, and have set aside a sunny, free-draining site for our kūmara tipu (growing tips) to be planted in late spring.

We'll be storing our kūmara in onion bags packed with kānuka brush and bracken, a tip shared with us by Rob & Bex at Growing Point, Dignan St Community Garden. Our market garden manager Sarah-Lily dropped in to see the kūmara harvest at Growing Point, where they are growing 16 heritage cultivars and stewarding the lineages of this collection.

They have an amazing booklet and poster coming out, which will be available for Matariki 🌠

Does your workplace or business want a local solution to food scraps that transforms “waste” into something genuinely valuable?

Sign up to Soil Factory 🌱

We collect food scraps and transform them into rich, living compost that helps grow fresh food at our urban community farm - right here in Ponsonby.

Your food scraps could become part of a regenerative local loop that supports soil health, strengthens food security, and helps mitigate climate change.

It’s a simple switch with meaningful impact: from waste, to soil, to food grown for our community 💚 Head to our website for more details: https://kelmarna.co.nz/soil-factory/

Produce of the Week: Persimmons! 🍊

Persimmons are in stock now at the Farm Shop for a limited time. A delicious autumn delight that shines in both sweet and savoury dishes.

Persimmons are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, fibre, and potassium - a nourishing boost as the days cool down.

Try them simply sliced into salads, paired with yoghurt and granola, or baked with a drizzle of honey and cinnamon for a warm, comforting dessert. They also make a delicious addition to savoury dishes alongside cheese or roasted vegetables (like in this delicious Baked Feta with Roasted Persimmon recipe)

Shop opening hours:
Wednesdays: 10am – 4pm
Saturdays: 9am – 12pm
