Hawke Sea Scouts

Hawke Sea Scouts http://www.hawke.org.nz/ Hawke is a Sea Scout group, which has been based on the edge of Opoutukeha or Cox's Bay since 1928.

Sea Scouts are part of the World Wide Scouting movement and a branch of Scouting New Zealand with a specific emphasis on maritime activities. Sea Scout Groups operate in a similar manner to a regular Scout Group, with trained volunteer leaders (mainly parents) providing an interesting programme of varied activities organised in sections for different age groups. The Purpose of Scouting is to contr

ibute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. Scouting is a voluntary non-political non-formal educational movement for young people, open to all without distinction of origin, race, or creed, in accordance with the purpose, principles and method which has evolved, from the concepts of Baden Powell & others, over the last 100 years.

Wow! As always the winterless North never fails to amaze us for Northland Regatta at Kai Iwi Lakes.

Hawke loaded up 2 trailers of camping gear and food, and 5 boats onto trailers. Then 24 scout and venturer youth and 10 adults made the trek north.

We had perfect weather and Hawke competed in sailing, rowing, kayaking, seamanship, iron scout and camping standards in junior, intermediate, senior and open divisions with great enthusiasm. We came 3rd in the Intemediate cutter sailing and 3rd in the open sailing and all had lots of fun.

Hawke also provided a fully crewed safety patrol boat to ensure the regatta ran smoothly and safely.

As well as the youth taking part in all the events one of our leaders was also assessed over two days for his Water Charge Certificate endorsements for Sailing and Rowing. It’s with amazing volunteers like this that we are able to run our water activities for our group safely

At the end of the weekend we had some very tired youth and leaders and a big job to decamp, the long drive home and the big unpack.

As always a massive BRAVO to our leaders and parent helpers for making this event possible.

What a fantastic first camp of the year it was with the Moana Rua Zone Founders Day celebration camp at Motu Moana campground.

Hawke had all sections represented with Keas, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers in attendance.

Saturday started with the annual awards ceremony recognising outstanding effort. We are proud to announce that two Hawke leaders were recognised, one receiving a Bronze and the other a Silver Tiki award for their volunteering. BRAVO.

Hawke youth had a fantastic two days of activities and went on to win the cubs section tug of war competition.

Additionally Hawke took out the Camp Standards prize for the best organised campsite thanks to the efforts of all Hawke youth and leaders.

After two days and nights of activities there are some tired youth (and leaders) who will sleep well.

Thanks as always to our volunteer leaders and parent helpers who make these events happen.

What a fantastic end to the year with an overnight adventure sail.

Our Hawke scouts section set off in the afternoon from Westhaven on the incoming tide for a sail up the harbour to Greenhithe.

After a great sail, we anchored the cutters outside the Tauhinu Sea Scouts Ship and headed ashore for dinner, some games and a sleepover.

Waking in the morning, breakfast and cleanup got underway as we waited for the tide to float the patrol boat and begin the ferry service back out to the anchored cutters.

With no wind, out came the oars and some rowing chants to get us on our way

Then after attempting to sail, but lack of wind not helping, we put the patrol boat to good use and got out the tow lines for the final leg home

A great and adventurous end to the year

What a great day it was today for the annual Auckland Canoe Carnival. We couldn’t have asked for better weather.

Hawke youth had some real team spirit on display as they cheered on their friends.

The teamwork started with assembling our gazebo, and pioneering a life jacket rack and flagpole, to setup our base for the day.

A great effort all around, in both the sprints and the relay races. Some tired youth who will sleep well tonight.

A special BRAVO to our leaders, and parents who helped out on the day.

Daylight savings, warmer weather, and great timing for the high tide, gave us the opportunity to get the cutters out on the water at The Ship for a row and a sail on a scouts section night.

A fantastic evening was had by all. It was wonderful to see our younger scouts practicing their rowing skills and our older scouts sailing around the bay.

Great to practice as well for our adventure sailing expedition with overnight stay planned for later this term.

It was a great afternoon today for Hawke to do some well overdue weeding and gardening around The Ship, and a cleanup of the foreshore. A job well done.

Followed by firing up the BBQ on the deck and chatting about our plans for the summer months, and the camps ahead.

With the perfect backdrop of two of our cutters sitting on the ramp ready for some sailing tomorrow.

BRAVO to all the youth and parents who helped out.

Our venturers, combined with those from Britannia, journeyed to Tukino ski field, braving gale force winds, and benefited from soft fresh snow. After digging the 4wd vehicles out of deep snow, we made our way home, with rainbows over desert rd showing us the way.
