Today, the Government has approved a new Code of Practice from the EHRC that interprets the Equality Act.

This document tells service providers that they can exclude trans people from single-sex spaces.

This is unlikely to mean that trans people will be excluded routinely, especially from basic services like toilets, but it does mean it may happen more often.

In response to requests from both trans young people and trans adults we support, we’ve co-developed guidance for trans and non-binary adults, and separate guidance for young people on what the new Code of Practice means, how to assess your safety in public spaces, and what to do when challenged.

New dates for our course for therapists and counsellors!

Bookings are now open for our September and November two-day specialist course for psychotherapists and counsellors (in training or in active practice), and mental health practitioners.

The course has been created in response to the demand for more in-depth learning from therapists and counsellors themselves, and the need trans people have for trans-knowledgeable therapists and counsellors.

We particularly welcome bookings from Q***r, Trans, and Intersex People of Colour, and trans people. We also have a limited number of bursaries for those who would otherwise be unable to attend.

Dates:
14-15 September
23-24 November

Location: London

Waiting Well is a new service from Gendered Intelligence and LGBT Foundation, created to support trans and non-binary adults who are registered with Exeter/The Laurels Gender Identity Clinic.

Long waits are a failure of healthcare and policy, and no one should have to wait years to access the healthcare they need.

Waiting Well aims to make the waiting experience feel more manageable and less lonely. There are different spaces depending on whether you want to build community, gain knowledge, or just have a chat with someone who gets it.

We see and hear the emotional response to the draft conversion practice ban Bill.

We know that there are loopholes that need closing, and we welcome the community's insight and critique.

GI is a trans community, and we would never support a bill that put trans people at risk or allowed conversion practices to continue. Today's legislation is a first draft, not the final text. It's our job now to make sure it becomes a robust, effective, and inclusive ban.

We know that people are worried and hurting, and we're asking for your grace and patience while we work with community and legal experts to find the best path forward.

We have campaigned for a fully-inclusive ban for six years, and we will keep pushing until this legislation is fit for purpose: no loopholes, no delays, no excuse for abuse.

We know it's not there right now. Today's draft is another small step on a journey that finishes with the end of conversion practices. We're in it together every step of the way.

Love and solidarity from all of us at GI 💜

👏 We did it! Today the Government have finally published their long overdue draft Bill to ban conversion practices.

For far too long, LGBTQ+ people have been subject to practices that seek to change or suppress who they are. Conversion practices have caused profound and lasting harm to many LGBTQ+ people.

The fact this abuse has remained legal in the UK for so long is a huge injustice.

The Ban Conversion Practices Coalition, which Gendered Intelligence is part of, is proud to have led the campaign to ban conversion practices, working tirelessly over the past six years to get to this stage.

While this is a moment to be celebrated, this is the beginning of a process not the end. Over the coming weeks and months, we will carefully review the legislation to ensure it is robust, effective, and puts an end to conversion practices once and for all.

Are you a homelessness organisation or a housing provider looking to maintain or embed trans-inclusive practice?

After the UK’s Supreme Court Ruling in For Women Scotland, and the consultation on the EHRC’s draft Code of Practice for services, your organisation may be navigating the implications for your workplace and service provision.

It is more important than ever that we create inclusive environments for the trans and non-binary people who work in and use our services.

Gendered Intelligence, AKT and Stonewall Housing have worked in partnership to develop a resource for housing and homelessness organisations to support you in navigating the impacts of the Supreme Court Ruling.
