Have you ever wondered what impact a year-long experience can have on your life?

For National Poetry Day, some mentors from Team Freedom in the West Midlands shared their mentoring experience through poetry.

Whether highlighting their dedication and growth mindset, the power of consistency in showing up every day for their pupils, or the team support that makes every challenge easier to navigate, their words captured the essence of a City Year.

Fridays are for Leadership Development Training! 🚀

Our mentors' training kicked off last week with an impactful session on classroom behaviour management, followed by an interactive Myers-Briggs workshop.
It was inspiring to watch our young leaders reflect on their personality profiles and discuss how understanding their individual strengths will help them thrive during their year of service and beyond.

Today, they’re putting those self-insights into practice as they take part in the first of our 8 Skills Builder workshops, focused on active listening and effective communication. 💬

We are already so proud of the difference our mentors are making, both in pupils' lives and in their own personal growth journeys.

"One year that changed everything." ✨

As we get ready to kick off a brand new school year with our incoming mentors, we’re looking back at the reflections shared by our July graduates over the summer.

Over 50% of our graduating cohort shared their stories online, and reading them reminded us exactly why near-peer mentoring is so transformative. While every mentor journey is unique, five core themes echoed across their stories:

1️⃣ Classroom Impact: Seeing pupils build confidence day by day.
2️⃣ Strong Community: Teammates and staff who have your back through every challenge.

A big welcome to our new cohort of City Year mentors! 🚀

This week marks the official start of our Basic Training Academy for our amazing volunteers joining us across London, Greater Manchester, and the West Midlands.

With a 100% turnout and incredible energy right from Day 1, we couldn't be more excited for the journey ahead. We can’t wait to see the growth, leadership, and lasting impact our mentors will bring to our partner schools starting this September.

💡 Our City Year mentors go above and beyond to create valuable opportunities for the students they support.

Back in July, our mentor Keira led the planning and delivery of a STEM event at our partner school, City of London Academy Islington, bringing together six guest speakers to inspire Year 10 pupils with their career journeys.

The impact?
📊 Over 80% of pupils found the talk engaging.
🚀 Nearly 20% felt more likely to pursue a career in STEM as a result!
