Congratulations to everybody receiving their GCSE results today! 🎉

We're in Darwen Vale High School celebrating with some of our year 11s who picked up their results this morning.

"“I came in thinking I had failed but I’ve done really well”, one student told us. Bethany* worked with The Access Project to raise her grades and learn more about her post-16 options.

“I got an 8 in English literature. I’ve been revising for it, but I wasn’t expecting to get an 8. I never normally get that high. I thought I was going to fail maths because the exams have been really hard, but I got a 5.”

Our programme in Lancashire is generously supported by our partner The Queen's College, Oxford University.

As we reflect on , we turn our attention towards the bigger picture of university access and social mobility.

The Social Mobility Commission’s newest report "Who gets in? University benchmarks for better social mobility" finds that, while most institutions are effectively recruiting from the available talent pool, nearly a third of English universities are under-representing students of a lower socio-economic background, despite them getting the grades.

A record-breaking 228,990 young people placed at their first choice university last Thursday. But thousands more still need support. 💚

By donating to The Access Project, you will give under-resourced young people the tools they need to succeed in school and access life-changing education opportunities.

"There’s no way I’d be where I am today without The Access Project, and I think that’s true for a lot of kids who benefit from their work. Above all, the charity gives hope. That means everything to a 16-year-old council estate lad like I was, who knows that the odds are stacked against him”. - Tahmid Chowdhury, Trustee and former student at The Access Project

Just who are the students on our programmes?

They are talented.
They are motivated.
They have the ability to succeed.

Our role is to offer guidance, critical tools, and opportunities so that they can do just that.

Each young person has a different story to tell. We asked a number of them to write about a subject that is close to their hearts.

First up is Courtney.

Courtney is a sixth form student from Cumbria. She is currently studying history, literature, and politics and is aiming to get into a top university. She believes that education should provide the opportunity to change the lives of every student: "With this blog I hope to encourage others so that they recognise the importance of not letting their backgrounds define their limits."

results day is less than one week away, and your support is crucial.

In the UK, social mobility is on the decline. Young people from low income families are three times less likely than their wealthier peers to attend top universities, limiting education opportunities and career prospects.

When you donate to The Access Project, you're giving young people the chance to thrive in education. Your gift provides a young person with mentoring, skills coaching, and tutoring, to help them find pathways to brighter futures.

University isn't just about getting a good qualification - it's about finding your community 🤝

Caleb, a year 12 pupil from London, is taking part in The Access Project alongside his A levels. Earlier this year, he took a school trip to the University of Bath to learn more about student life. He enjoyed touring the campus and making himself at home amongst his future peers.

🗣️ "Being there made me realise how important it is to actually like the environment and be able to picture yourself there."
