New research shows that 72% of young people have used AI companions, or ‘chatbots.’
While many young people may use chatbots out of curiosity, as a practical tool or to combat loneliness, we also know that in many cases, chatbots have risk built into their design.
For example, chatbots have been seen to provide users with unsafe advice, to promote stereotypes through their responses, and have been designed to agree with users without basis to promote engagement.
As part of our AI literacy programme (launching next week!) we have produced a KS3-4 lesson on how chatbots affect relationships.
This lesson will help pupils to understand what AI companions are — including how chatbots use data to mimic human interaction — as well as the impact they can have on relationships and wellbeing, and strategies to manage their responses.
