Students today aren't passive: they question, they challenge, they want to know how things really work. Especially when it comes to AI and where their information comes from 👀

In part two of our chat with Dr Sally Latham, our Education Lead, she takes us inside a Wiki in Schools workshop: busting myths about how Wikipedia is built, and giving students the skills to spot fake news for themselves.

Turns out they're sharper than we give them credit for.

England and Wales have just come through one of the driest summers on record, with reservoirs dropping to exceptionally low levels.

You'll have seen the images everywhere this summer: straw-coloured parks, cracked ground, water levels we rarely witness. But here's the catch: almost none of those images are free to use, and the open, permanent record of this summer has very little to show for it.

That's where you come in. If you're out in an affected part of England or Wales, your photos can help document what this drought actually looked like. They can even help illustrate the Wikipedia article on this summer, which right now has almost no photos of the drought at all.

Ever thought about editing Wikipedia but weren't sure where to begin? Well, despite what you might think, you don't need any special skills.

Wikipedia is written and maintained by volunteers, and at Wikimedia UK we run friendly introductory sessions to help people make their very first edit.

We've been shortlisted for the work we never do alone. Wikimedia UK is on the shortlist for the 2026 Digital Inclusion Awards, run by the Digital Poverty Alliance, in the Partnerships for Impact category.

It's recognition that digital inclusion isn't only about access: it's about media and information literacy for everyone, so people can navigate a digital world with confidence.

Winners will be announced on Thursday 10 September at the End Digital Poverty Week Gala in London, as the DPA marks its 25th anniversary.

Congratulations to all 15 organisations on the shortlist, good company to be in.

What does someone's very first Wikipedia edit look like? For 70 people at a Wikipedia@25 training led by Wikimedia UK volunteer Josef Anthony, it looked like 20 articles improved and 300+ edits in a single online session. 🎉

The focus: notable British Nigerians and the contributions of diaspora communities to life in the UK, stories too often underrepresented online.

And this was just one session. Across the training he's led, the editors Josef has taught have added more than 4.38 million words to the projects.

We're proud to support Josef's work through our project grants scheme, putting resources behind community members already leading the way.

This is how we we can help students think critically about AI (and it doesn't start with telling them to avoid it).

Back in May our Education Lead Sally Latham ran a workshop at Ayr Academy: two hours on how generative AI actually works, where the risks are, and how to use it well. Students talked through their own experiences with AI, tried some hands-on exercises, and looked at how Wikipedia, written and checked by real people, differs from AI-generated content.

The best moments came when students took the lead, especially a brilliant conversation about social media algorithms and how the content they see is being shaped.

It all happened thanks to school librarians Anais Cayzac and Hayley Milne. It's very often librarians teaching these vital skills, and their network has been so supportive of our pilots.
