Every Monday, Frank’s Club brings men together at Blackfriars for a chance to enjoy a game of pool, catch up with friends and meet others in the community.

This week, members came together to celebrate Brian reaching the wonderful age of 90. Brian may have put his cue down for a few minutes, but he was soon back to doing what he enjoys — staying active and spending time with friends.

At Blackfriars, we love celebrating our members and the milestones that make our community so special 💙

Clubs like Frank’s provide more than just an activity. They offer friendship, connection, routine and a sense of belonging, helping our members stay active and socially connected.

🌟 Celebrating our second Southwark Stars nominee — Ayda! 💙

We’re delighted to celebrate Ayda, our second nominee for Southwark Stars, this time in the Older Volunteer of the Year category.

Ayda is a remarkable volunteer who generously gives her time, creativity and skills to support others. As our artist volunteer at the Wednesday Mental Health & Wellbeing group, she inspires members to explore their creativity, try new skills and build confidence.

Her warm and friendly approach makes everyone feel welcome, valued and encouraged 🎨💙

Ayda also regularly supports our Positive Ageing services, including our Sunday Lunch Club, where she helps with kitchen preparation and plays a wonderful part in making members’ days special.

And her creativity doesn’t stop there! Ayda has raised funds for our services by making and selling beautiful crocheted purses, with another fundraising idea already in the works for later this year 🧶✨

Ayda’s kindness, creativity and dedication make a real difference to the people around her. We’re incredibly lucky to have her as part of our Blackfriars Settlement community and couldn’t be more pleased to see her recognised as a Southwark Stars nominee 🌟

🌟 Celebrating our wonderful befriender, Silvia 💙

We’re delighted to celebrate Silvia, who we nominated for Southwark Stars and who received her certificate yesterday.

For two years, Silvia befriended a local lady and supported her through many changes in her life. One of the most meaningful moments was helping her step outside for the first time since lockdown — something that may sound simple, but was an incredibly significant moment for her.

Silvia was also there to celebrate her 99th birthday with her and her son, creating a very special memory together. Sadly, the lady passed away shortly afterwards.

Throughout those final two years, Silvia gave her friendship, companionship, kindness and care. She brought connection and meaningful moments into her life when they mattered most.

We are incredibly grateful to Silvia for the life-changing difference she made. 💙

Congratulations, Silvia, and thank you for being such a wonderful befriender. 🌷

A day at the seaside can mean so much more than a day out. 🌊☀️

Today, our Crusoe Club members enjoyed a coach trip to Eastbourne, taking in the sea air, sharing fish and chips, and making new memories together (despite a seagull making off with Verna's ice cream! 😄🐦🍦).

At Blackfriars Settlement, we're committed to reducing isolation and creating opportunities for people living with sight loss to stay connected, build friendships, and enjoy experiences that support wellbeing, confidence, and independence.

A huge thank you to Andras and his fantastic team for their warm hospitality and generosity. It was a lovely opportunity for our members to come together, enjoy great food, and spend time in such a welcoming environment.

Everyone tucked into a delicious selection of fresh salads, cold meats, and cheeses while enjoying great conversation and even better company.

Last week, the Blackfriars Settlement team attended the Southwark Community Connect Fair, meeting local residents and sharing more about our community hub and the wide range of services, activities and opportunities available. 💙

From our Positive Ageing programmes and wellbeing activities to volunteering opportunities and community support, we’re here to help people connect, build friendships and feel part of their local community.

🌊 A day at the seaside for our Positive Ageing members

Last Thursday, Siggy led a group of 49 Positive Ageing members on a wonderful day trip to Whitstable, giving everyone the chance to enjoy a day by the sea, spend time with friends and make new memories together.

Our Positive Ageing programme is about helping people continue to live active, connected and fulfilling lives. Experiences like this encourage people to get out into the community, strengthen existing friendships, build new ones and enjoy the simple moments that have such a positive impact on wellbeing.

A trip to the seaside might seem like a small thing, but for many of our members it is an opportunity to laugh, reconnect, feel part of something and create memories that last long after the day is over. These shared experiences help people stay connected to their community and remind us all of the importance of belonging.

A huge thank you to Siggy for organising such a fantastic day and to everyone who joined us.

Bringing people together is at the heart of what we do at Blackfriars Settlement💜

Earlier this month, we were delighted to welcome the team from Munich Re for a kitchen takeover, giving our members and corporate volunteers the opportunity to connect, share stories and enjoy time together over a meal.

The day was made even more special as we celebrated our member Susi’s 82nd birthday, with wonderful musical entertainment from Salim bringing everyone together in song and celebration 🎂🎶

These moments matter. They help build friendships, reduce isolation, strengthen community connections and create meaningful experiences for everyone involved.

A huge thank you to the Munich Re team for their support and for helping make the day such a memorable one for our members✨
