Following discussions with Jeremy Vine, he's asked to step aside and will no longer be hosting this year's Carers UK Awards.

Jeremy has been incredibly supportive of Carers UK including through his radio show, and we're grateful for that support. But after listening carefully to our community over the past couple of days we've agreed with Jeremy that the focus of the evening should stay entirely on celebrating carers and the individuals and organisations that support them.

Every day, hundreds of people leave their jobs to provide unpaid care, impacting their finances and long-term futures.

It shouldn’t have to be a struggle to balance paid work and care.

Stronger rights are needed. Nearly half of carers in employment say paid Carer’s Leave could help them stay in work.

Join us in calling for 10 days of paid Carer’s Leave a year, by taking part in the Government’s employment rights consultation.

The more people who speak out, the stronger our case will be.

We've seen the response to the announcement of Jeremy Vine as host of this year's Carers UK Awards and want to address it directly.

We recognise the strength of feeling around how disability and benefits claimants are sometimes portrayed in the media, including on daytime television. Many of the carers we support are disabled themselves or care for someone who is - and rely on a benefits system that too often fails them.

That's exactly why we've campaigned consistently for reform of the benefits system, including through our campaign (https://www.carersuk.org/news-and-campaigns/our-campaigns/disability-and-health-benefits/), our leadership of the Carer Poverty Coalition where, alongside 130 other organisations, we have called for the Government to take urgent steps to improve support to unpaid carers, including raising carer-related means-tested benefits and reviewing Carer’s Allowance (https://www.carersuk.org/news-and-campaigns/our-campaigns/carer-poverty-coalition/) and through our work directly with the media to shine a light on unpaid carers being forced to repay overpayments of Carer's Allowance. We also remain a member of the Disability Benefits Consortium.

We won't stop pushing for a system that treats carers and disabled people fairly – and will keep making the case for change.

There's an urgent need for complete reform of Carer's Allowance, including making it simpler and easier to understand, while also raising its value to better support unpaid carers’ financial security.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us make a powerful case for change.

Rachel, a sandwich carer, cares for her Dad who has been experiencing long term health issues following cancer treatment, while also looking after her two young daughters, one with Type 1 Diabetes, and the other awaiting an Autism assessment. Her caring responsibilities mean she rarely gets a break.

Today, she was interviewed on BBC Radio 5 Live alongside our Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Tamara Sandoul, about our new report highlighting the unrelenting pressures sandwich carers face and what needs to be done to help: https://carersuk.pulse.ly/qiwekhtoh6

The Government wants to hear the views of carers and disabled people on Personal Independence Payments (PIP). This is an important opportunity to shape the recommendations of the Timms Review.

The PIP system is complex and places significant administrative and emotional pressures on carers and the people they care for. It’s vital that Government hears the voices of carers with direct experience of navigating PIP.

During September and October, 15 workshops will take place. These will be a mix of face-to-face and online events. Places will be allocated at random.

Register you interest, by 5pm Friday 21 August if you would like a chance to take part in the workshops: https://bit.pulse.ly/cqhiqk59h3
