More men than ever are living with prostate cancer in the UK.

New figures from Macmillan Cancer Support, featured across the media this weekend, estimate that around 600,000 men are now living with the disease – 100,000 more than in 2020.

Our CEO, Oliver Kemp, joined GB News to discuss what’s behind that rise, and what needs to happen next.

An ageing population is part of the picture, but greater awareness matters too. When high-profile men such as Sir Chris Hoy, Jeremy Clarkson and Lord David Cameron speak openly about their prostate cancer diagnoses, they start conversations and encourage other men to think about their own risk and get checked.

But awareness alone isn’t enough.

Prostate cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages, when it may be easier to treat. We want every man who needs a test to be able to access one. At the same time, we're driving the research and innovation that will help us detect prostate cancer earlier and more accurately.

More men living longer after prostate cancer is progress. Now we need to make sure more men have the chance to benefit from earlier diagnosis and better treatment.

Our Trustee Nick Jones was on Sky News today, speaking about prostate cancer screening and the importance of finding prostate cancer earlier.

Nick knows first-hand the difference early diagnosis can make, and we’re hugely grateful to him for continuing to use his voice and experience to keep this important issue in the spotlight.

Following the Government’s decision on prostate cancer screening, new guidance has raised concerns about how men without symptoms, particularly those at higher risk, will access PSA testing.

At Prostate Cancer Research, we want to see clear, consistent access to testing for men who need it, alongside continued investment in the research and innovation that can transform how prostate cancer is diagnosed in the future.

Dr Katherine Chin, a medical doctor and researcher at King’s College London is conducting a study to understand which side effects people experience from ADT, which have the greatest impact on their lives, and which they find most bothersome.

The Department of Health and Social Care has confirmed that the Prostate Cancer Risk Management Programme (PCRMP) has been withdrawn and replaced by NHS and NICE guidance.

We have asked for further clarification from DHSC on the implications of this, but in the meantime we examine what this means for PSA testing and the questions that remain around informed choice and access for men at increased risk of prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer Research, supported by the NHS, is sending letters to ½ million men in England who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Prostate Progress is a research initiative from PCR which combines NHS health data with patients’ experiences to help researchers better understand prostate cancer and improve future care.
