🚨 Milestone unlocked: we’ve reached over 200! 🎉

We are incredibly proud that over 200 MPs and Peers now support Herbie’s Law – a huge milestone for the campaign, and one we couldn’t have reached without you!

Since we launched Herbie’s Law in 2024, people across the country have been contacting their MPs and helping us make the case for a kinder approach to research.

It’s taken a lot of emails, conversations, campaigning and determination to get here, and so many of you have played a part. 💙

To celebrate, this week five well-known faces are lending their support to Herbie’s Law:
Dame Joanna Lumley, Chris Packham, Pete Wicks, Photographer Rankin, and Carol Royle.

There’s still plenty of work ahead, but reaching over 200 shows just how much support for change has grown in only two years.

🏃‍♀️ A huge congratulations to Spiroulla, who completed the Hyde Park 10km in support of Animal Free Research UK 💙

Not only did Spiroulla take on 10km, but thanks to the generosity of her family, friends and supporters, she raised an incredible £11,865 to help create a future where animals are no longer used in medical research. Wow! 🐾

Spiroulla said:

"I was so proud to be wearing my Herbie’s Heroes t-shirt on the day! ❤️

It was such a meaningful experience for me, and I’m really grateful that you sent me the t-shirt and gave me the opportunity to support such an important cause. Wearing it throughout the run made the day feel even more meaningful."

🐾 A Labour Party Conference to remember!

An amazing 77 MPs and Peers visited our stand or met with us, including key Ministers and the Prime Minister's Director of Political Strategy, helping us have important conversations about Herbie’s Law and the future of research.

Highlights included:
🎤 The Animal Welfare Minister speaking at our fringe event
🐶 A positive discussion with the Science Minister
🏛️ Another MP joining our APPG, bringing membership to 57

Support for Herbie’s Law grew even further - and that means we’ve now reached a very exciting milestone... all will be revealed next week 👀

But one of our favourite things to hear? Just how many MPs told us they’d received emails from constituents encouraging them to come and speak to us.

💙 So this success belongs to you, too. A huge thank you to everyone who contacted their MP, everyone who visited us, and our fantastic Public Affairs team for another brilliant conference!

🎉 This October marks 10 years of the UK’s first Animal Replacement Centre of Excellence (ARC) at Queen Mary University of London, established in partnership with Animal Free Research UK 🔬

Over the past decade, the ARC has pushed the boundaries of animal-free cancer research, using technologies including sophisticated 3D human cell models and organ-on-chip systems.

And the anniversary gave us another reason to celebrate:

🎖️ Professor Mike Philpott received our prestigious Pioneer Award, recognising his lifelong dedication to transforming the way we study human cancer without animals.

His incredible contribution continues through the work of Dr Adrian Biddle and his team, who are taking these approaches forward with the aim of replacing animals in research and delivering better outcomes for patients.

He says:

"I am honoured to receive this award and to recognise the remarkable achievements of this research team.

Our partnership with Animal Free Research UK has enabled us to make meaningful progress towards more effective, human-relevant treatments for patients while supporting a future where animals are no longer part of the research process.

This work would not be possible without the charity's continued support and Adrian Biddle’s unwavering commitment to advancing innovation in human-specific science."

Most breast cancer researchers rely on animal-derived products like foetal calf serum (FCS) to grow cells in the lab.

Dr Fiona Saunders at the University of Aberdeen is doing things differently. She's working to replace FCS with alternatives that don't use animals ❤️‍🩹

FCS is collected as a by-product of the meat industry from unborn calves after the slaughter of pregnant cows - raising serious ethical concerns.

It also presents scientific challenges, with batch-to-batch variation leading to inconsistent and unreliable results.

💡 Fiona is identifying which alternatives work best for different cell types - testing how cells grow, behave and respond to drugs. She’ll then share these findings, so other researchers can make the switch too - helping accelerate the shift to animal-free science.
