🎶Reasons to Sing’: Singing, spirituality, and the search for meaning

We are sharing details of an upcoming conference at the University of Birmingham exploring the experience of singing and song, and its connection to spirituality and meaning-making throughout human history.

Why does singing give life meaning for so many people? What is the relationship between singing and the human spirit? And how does this connection shape the ways we sing, participate and experience music?

The conference will bring together perspectives exploring these questions and more.

Behind our work as a charity is a community of people sharing their knowledge, experience, and passion for cathedral music.

Our volunteer committees bring together a range of musicians, educators, researchers, and supporters who help shape our programmes, advise on key areas of our work, and ensure our decisions reflect the needs of the cathedral music community. From supporting the development of future talent to championing our musical heritage, these groups play an important role in helping us achieve our mission.

🎵 Big news for Small Sounds!

We are delighted to share that our Small Sounds programme is growing! Thanks to its incredible success, we mentioned last week the programme is expanding to four new locations, giving even more babies, toddlers, and their grown-ups the chance to discover the joy of music together.

Small Sounds offers free, welcoming music sessions for children aged 0–5, designed to nurture confidence, communication and creativity through singing, movement, and play. More than music, it's about bringing families together, creating lasting memories and helping little ones take their very first musical steps.

This year, as we celebrate our 70th anniversary year, we reflect on seven decades of impact.

Founded in 1956 by the Revd Ronald Sibthorp, Precentor of Truro Cathedral, as Friends of Cathedral Music, the charity was established in response to the post-war decline of cathedral music. Investing over ÂŁ7,500,000 since this time, we have supported many musicians, strengthened choral and organ traditions, and invested in the musical life of cathedrals across the UK and Ireland.

In 2020, we became Cathedral Music Trust building on that legacy and today we continue to invest in people, music and communities to inspire, educate and bring people together.
