A new work 🎶

This Saturday, a new introit by Errollyn Wallen CBE, Master of the King’s Music, will be performed for the first time at Evensong at Exeter Cathedral as part of our National Gathering.

The work has been commissioned by Cathedral Music Trust in partnership with supporter Tom Hoffman, whose charitable trust has established an endowment to fund a new anthem every two to three years, in perpetuity, for cathedral, church and chapel choirs.

The aim is to bring new music by contemporary composers into the living repertoire of choral music. Errollyn Wallen's introit is the first commission through the endowment, written for the Choir of Exeter Cathedral. Its first performance on Saturday 10 October also falls during Cathedral Music Trust's 70th anniversary year, making this a particularly special moment for us.

We are looking forward to hearing this new work for the first time at Exeter Cathedral.

Today marks the centenary of BBC Choral Evensong - a treasure in British broadcasting.

Since 7 October 1926, the programme has brought the sound of choirs, organists and sacred music from churches, chapels and cathedrals to many, across the world.

Today, our CEO, Jonathan Mayes, and Chair of Trustees, Jonathan Macdonald, were at Westminster Abbey for the special centenary service, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. The service brought together music by Howells and Parry, whose works have featured prominently over the programme’s history, alongside a new introit by Kerensa Briggs, composed especially for the occasion.

100 years of Choral Evensong on the BBC 🎶

Tomorrow, BBC Choral Evensong marks its 100th anniversary with a special broadcast from Westminster Abbey.

For a century, the programme has brought the sound of choirs, organs and sacred music into homes across the country and around the world, introducing generations of listeners to a tradition that continues to evolve.

The BBC first broadcast Choral Evensong nationally on 7 October 1926 in a service live from Westminster Abbey. On the exact date of the 100th anniversary, the world’s longest-running outside broadcast programme returns to the Abbey for a celebratory service to mark the occasion. The service includes music by Howells and Parry, whose repertoire has featured prominently over the last 100 years, together with an introit composed especially for the occasion by Kerensa Briggs.

Our 2026 Christmas cards feature five original designs by London-based illustrator Rosie Brooks, inspired by cathedral music and the festive season.

Working in traditional pen and ink and watercolour, Rosie brings a distinctive style shaped by her background in both music and illustration. A Durham University music graduate with a Master’s in Children’s Book Illustration from Cambridge, she has worked with organisations including Oxford University Press, Classic FM, the Royal Ballet and Opera, and John Lewis.

We are delighted to have Rosie’s creativity bringing our Christmas cards to life this year.

Our story began in 1956, when Rev. Ronald Sibthorp founded ‘Friends of Cathedral Music’, determined to protect and promote the choral tradition after its decline following the Second World War.

Today, as the Cathedral Music Trust, we carry that mission forward. From those early beginnings, we have grown into a national charity under Royal Patronage supporting choristers, church music departments, and helping cathedral music thrive for the future.
