This International Day of Play, we're celebrating Can't Wait to Learn Ukraine - War Child's tablet and mobile phone learning programme that helps children keep learning despite the war.

Through games, stories and interactive activities, children build language and maths skills wherever they are - in the classroom, at home or finding safety in bomb shelters.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Can't Wait to Learn app has been downloaded more than 250,000 times.

Last month, Can't Wait to Learn Ukraine was handed over to the Government of Ukraine, formally becoming part of the national education system and helping ensure children can access learning for years to come.

As War Child game developer Vlodymyr says: "They are having fun, they are learning, and they are forgetting about the war completely."

❤️ At War Child, we see the power of play every day. It's why we support children's education and mental health through play-based programmes, and why we bring gaming communities together to help raise funds to support our vital work.

Whether it's a child learning through Can't Wait to Learn in countries including Ukraine, Lebanon and Uganda, or a supporter gaming for good, play creates opportunities to learn, heal and connect.

Three months on, children in Lebanon are still living through the devastating impact of war. Despite the ceasefire, attacks have intensified.

More than 44,800 children are currently living in temporary shelters, with a further 340,000 children living with family and friends, in cars, bombed out or abandoned buildings, or even on the streets.

But the impact on children goes far beyond the numbers.

Children are physically more vulnerable - their bodies are less resilient to injury, food insecurity, and disease. Being forced from their homes disrupts schooling, routines, and the stability children need to grow and develop. Many children have witnessed violence - experiences that can cause lasting psychological harm.

Overcrowded shelters increase the risk of illness, abuse, and exploitation, particularly for girls. And when children lose months or years of education and support, the consequences can follow them long into adulthood.

War Child and our partners continue to provide emergency support, mental health and social care, and child protection for children and families across Lebanon.

But what children need most is for the violence to stop.

Schools, hospitals, shelters, homes, and the routes families use to escape danger must be protected. All parties to the conflict must do everything possible to keep children safe.

In a landmark moment, children helped shape the UN Human Rights Council resolution “Realising the rights of the child affected by armed conflict”, marking a historic step forward for the rights of children affected by war.

War Child supported children and young people from Colombia, South Sudan and Uganda to speak directly to decision makers about the issues that matter most to them, including education, mental health support and protection.

Because children should not only be protected during conflict. Their voices should help shape the response to it.

“I missed a lot as a child. I did not have time to play. Growing up in conflict-affected communities means survival first.” - Felix, South Sudan (War Child's TeamUp Global Partnerships Coordinator)

Children who grow up surrounded by conflict can carry the effects of trauma long after the violence ends - struggling with fear, stress, isolation, and the loss of a safe, stable childhood.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, Felix shares why TeamUp - our mental health programme that uses play and movement - matters. Developed by War Child and our partners, TeamUp helps children affected by conflict feel safe and begin to heal.

“There is that friendship, there is that reconnection, there is that freedom that a child gets in TeamUp. And this is everything that matters so much.”

❤️ Over the past ten years, TeamUp has reached more than 500,000 children across 30 countries - helping children process their trauma, rebuild confidence, make friends, and feel like children again.

Today, TeamUp is being run by War Child and our partners in Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jordan, Lebanon, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Uganda and Ukraine!

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we're celebrating the power of play in helping children recover from the lasting impact of war. Find out more: https://bit.ly/4d3H3Z1
