Hello fellow nomad.
My name is Khalil, and I am the founder of the Fair Nomad project.
Our mission is to help less fortunate communities around the world build a prosperous, sustainable future for themselves. We achieve this by catalyzing the generation of employment and education opportunities in and around these communities, through social tourism.
The concept is quite simple really. Inst
ead of the standard charity model of asking people to give their time and/or money to support an altruistic cause, with nothing tangible being offered in return, we provide an incentive for this altruistic act - a real holiday. A real break from everything and everybody from the western world. A completely unique, and rare experience.
Fair nomads are first and foremost travelers, gap year workers, students, basically people like you and me. People tired of being a tourist, tired of seeing the same thing over and over again in different parts of the world, tired of busy places and tired of being ripped off wherever we go simply because we are not from there. Tired of being but a cog in the tourism machine, and being treated like walking ATMs. We are people who want to truly experience a different culture for what it really is, at its essence, and feel like we have experienced something that money cannot buy. We want to be alive, and not to simply live. All-inclusive hotel packages, bus tours, group activities - all these things we avoid at all cost and instead dream of being able to experience something truly unique, something that nobody else can or has done before. Something that gets the eyes of our friends and family open wide in disbelief. Something that changes your perspective on your own life, and everything that you have done up until now.
What we offer our volunteers is just this. In exchange for 2 to 3 hours of teaching in local impoverished schools and/or helping the local communities through various projects, our nomads are given the holiday of a lifetime. The locations that we choose to operate from are in some of the most beautiful, untouched places that I have ever seen through my own travels. Our volunteers experience living in and around wonders of nature, and have the opportunity to do a range of activities such as surf, hike, spearfish, snorkel etc. while there. What we offer is the chance to do whatever you want with your time. We bring you to the Wild West, and leave you to your own devices with all the gear you need, for free.
It is not for everybody, but if you are smiling while reading this, then you are one of us.
Now let’s talk of the employment opportunities that we generate. Whenever spending time with us at our sites, you will hire one guide who will stay with you at all times, personally recruited and screened by me. Everybody who comes will pay the same amount per week, and the number of guides working will be proportional to the amount of volunteers staying on the campsite. These guides are young people who have no qualifications, no real future ahead of them, but possess a wealth of knowledge about their surroundings and the local culture. Everything and anything our volunteers need or want while staying with us is taken care of by these guides. The average suggested fee per volunteer is about 30 GBP per week, or 500K IDR, which goes straight to the guides. You will pay this to the guides in cash, in person, to ensure that they pocket the full amount.
That’s enough for now.
I would like to invite you to browse through our website, especially the blog section, to find out more about everything we have done and our ongoing projects.
Thank you for your visit, and your time in reading this…if you do not feel this is for you, for whatever reason, I hope we have given you a slither of inspiration to seek out social tourism for your next adventure abroad, wherever you are. And dare we say, who knows, even start something similar of your own somewhere...
