Brent Refugee Week Celebration 2026 | Human Rights Festival 21 June 2026 | Ark Academy, Wembley Park

What does community really look like?

This short film captures the energy, creativity and human connections that made the Brent Refugee Week Celebration 2026 such a special day. Held on 21 June 2026 at Ark Academy, Wembley Park, the event formed part of both 2026 and the Human Rights Festival, bringing together hundreds of residents, artists, community organisations, volunteers and local leaders to celebrate the theme of Courage.

Throughout the afternoon, participants enjoyed live music, dance, interactive workshops, children's activities, exhibitions, storytelling and food. More than a celebration, the event created opportunities for people from different cultures and backgrounds to meet, learn from one another and build lasting connections.

The event was funded by Brent Council and Wembley Stadium Foundation through the Love Where You Live Fund, and delivered through a collaboration between WE RESTART Charity, Useful Productions, Salusbury World, and the many organisations that form the Brent Borough of Sanctuary network, whose dedication made the day possible.

At WE RESTART, we believe that arts and culture have the power to break down barriers, foster belonging and strengthen communities. This film is a celebration of everyone who contributed their time, creativity and passion to make the event a success.

Thank you to all the performers, artists, volunteers, partner organisations, funders and everyone who joined us on the day. Together, you demonstrated that welcoming communities are built through participation, creativity and solidarity.

🌍🕊️ 75 years of the Refugee Convention. 75 years of protecting hope.

Today we mark the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention—a landmark commitment to protect people forced to flee persecution, conflict and violence.

Behind every refugee is a story, a profession, a dream, and a talent. Too often, displacement hides the incredible creativity and skills people bring with them.

At WE RESTART, we believe that art is a human right, a universal language, and a powerful tool for dignity, healing and belonging. 🎨🎭🎶 Through our programmes, we support displaced artists to rebuild their creative practice, share their voices, and enrich the communities they now call home.

As part of this commitment, our Human Rights Today Digital Archive preserves stories, artworks and lived experiences that remind us that human rights are not just words on paper—they are lives, memories and futures worth protecting. 📚💙

On this anniversary, we celebrate resilience, creativity and the people who continue to inspire us every day.

Because protecting refugees also means protecting their culture, their creativity and their right to contribute.

✨ Today we had the pleasure of celebrating **C.R.E.W.** at **Heatherwick Studio** as part of the *Who Makes Space?* exhibition by FIAE + Heatherwick Studio. 🎉

Seeing this project recognised on such a prestigious platform is a proud moment for everyone involved. 🏆

👏 A huge congratulations to **Chrissy, Joshua and Samir** – the brilliant team behind **Inkline Studio** – for their vision, commitment and countless hours of hard work. It has been a privilege to collaborate with them through the **Human Rights Festival** and the **London Festival of Architecture 2026** on a project that brought architecture, art and community together. 🎨🏛️🤝

🌿 C.R.E.W. was never just about creating a place; it was about creating **belonging**. Every brushstroke, conversation and shared moment helped shape the future of the UK's first **Nature Connection Centre** in Roundwood Park, NW10. 💚

❤️ This recognition belongs to everyone who took part: the local residents, volunteers, artists, partners and supporters who contributed their time, creativity and energy. Together, you've shown how communities can shape spaces that truly reflect the people who use them. 🌍✨

🎉 What an incredible celebration! ❤️🌍

We're so excited to finally share some photos from our Brent Refugee Week & Human Rights Festival celebration, which took place on 20 June. 📸✨

What a day it was! 💛 Nearly 300 people came together to celebrate community, creativity and solidarity. We welcomed 20+ organisations, inspiring artists 🎨, talented performers 🎭🎶, local residents 🤝 and representatives from Brent Council, all united by a shared commitment to inclusion, human rights and the power of the arts.

A huge thank you 🙏 to Brent Council and the LWYL Grant for making this event possible, and to every volunteer 💚, partner, performer and attendee who helped create such a warm, welcoming and joyful atmosphere.

Together, we showed what a welcoming borough looks like. 🕊️✨

🎉 We are delighted and incredibly proud to have been awarded the Culture Mile BID Grant for Reclaiming Stories, a trauma-informed arts programme supporting Asian women who experienced abuse during childhood at the We Restart Hub in Barbican.

📷🦢 The programme will be led by multi-award-winning artist Sujata Setia , winner of the Sony World Photography 🌎 and the Wellcome Photography Prize

♻️ Through weekly workshops combining photography and origami using recycled materials from our Initiative, participants will have the opportunity to reclaim their narratives through creativity, connection and culturally sensitive support.

🖼️ The project will culminate in co-created portrait artworks and a public exhibition in March during , celebrating resilience, creativity and the power of storytelling.

💜 Violence against women and girls remains a significant issue in the UK, with one in four women experiencing domestic abuse during their lifetime. Survivors from Asian and other underrepresented communities often face additional barriers, including stigma, isolation and limited access to culturally appropriate support.

🤝 Reclaiming Stories seeks to address this need by creating a safe, community-based space that supports healing and long-term recovery.

🙏 Our sincere thanks to the jury, Culture Mile BID and the City of London for supporting this important project.

🌟 We would also like to thank ActionFunder for providing charities like ours with an invaluable platform to connect with funders and bring impactful community projects to life.

This beautiful artwork takes us on a powerful journey through a map leading to the word WELCOME 🤗, with boats navigating between inspiring words including Free, Mankind, Safety, Social, Then and Now, Civil, Freedom, Shine, Humanity, Light, Save, and Home 🏠✨.

Through their creativity, imagination, and kindness, these young artists have expressed messages of hope, belonging, safety, and humanity. Their work reminds us that everyone deserves to feel welcomed, valued, and at home. 💛🕊️

A special thank you to our fantastic workshop leader Rebeka 🌟 and workshop assistant Abida 🌸 for guiding and supporting the children throughout this creative journey. Your encouragement and dedication helped bring these powerful ideas to life.
