POV: healing, leadership, sisterhood… and a little bit of unseriousness too 😭❤️

Some of our Aya girls (both new and alumni!) recreating their favourite meme pictures at the launch of the 2026 Aya Initiative because yes, we’re building future leaders, but we’re also making memories, finding joy again, and creating safe spaces where girls can simply be themselves ✨

And honestly… this is exactly how Friday should be spent 😂💫

Welcome to the Aya sisterhood 💛

The journey officially begins…

We’ve officially launched the 3rd cohort of the Aya Initiative live in Accra, Ghana, welcoming another incredible group of resilient, brilliant, and purpose-filled young women into the AKAYA family. 💛

The Aya Initiative is AKAYA Foundation’s transformational leadership, mental wellness, and empowerment programme designed to support young women navigating significant life challenges including mental health struggles, gender-based violence, grief, displacement, and other barriers affecting their well-being and future.

This programme has transformed the lives of almost 60 girls across Ghana through mentorship, psychosocial support, leadership development, sisterhood, community engagement, and safe spaces for healing and growth.

And now, thanks to the support of the , we are about to embark on this journey once again with our 2026 cohort.

Looking around the room during the launch, we saw courage, potential, vulnerability, brilliance, and hope. We cannot wait to witness the growth, healing, leadership, and impact that will come from this year’s programme. Not only in the lives of these girls, but also in the countless lives they will go on to touch and transform themselves.

Welcome to Aya 2026. ✨

Last year, she poured into our girls on Intellectual Wellness.
This year, she’s back again, now officially as a doctor!

Tonight, we’re excited to welcome back Dr Aghogho Okpara to the AKAYA Wellness Initiative 2026.

Her journey is a reminder of the power of discipline, growth, and continuously investing in yourself and we can’t wait for the girls to learn from her once again as she leads tonight’s session on intellectual wellness.

And of course, a huge congratulations to Dr on graduating medical school.

We’re so proud of you and grateful to have you back with us.

Periods should never be a barrier to a girl’s education, confidence, health, or future.

This Menstrual Health Month, we’re raising awareness about period poverty( a reality affecting millions of girls around the world, including many in underserved communities across Ghana. From missing school to facing shame, stigma, and lack of access to menstrual products, the impact goes far beyond periods alone.

Through The Like Her Project, AKAYA Foundation continues to provide menstrual health education, hygiene support, and safe conversations for young girls across Ghana because every girl deserves dignity, education, and the opportunity to thrive.

Over the past few weeks, these incredible UK-based medics have been working alongside the AKAYA team to help co-create the health education content for our Like Her Project currently taking place in Northern Ghana.

From menstrual and reproductive health to mental wellbeing, confidence-building, and culturally sensitive delivery, their time, expertise, and thoughtful contributions have helped shape workshops that are impactful, relevant, and grounded in the realities of the girls we serve.

We’re deeply grateful for their support and commitment to empowering the next generation of girls through education and health advocacy. Thank you for being part of this work.

Tonight, the AKAYA Wellness Initiative continues with a session focused on Creative Wellness.

In the middle of busy schedules, exams, pressure, and expectations, creativity can become more than just art, it can become a way to pause, reflect, process emotions, and reconnect with yourself.

We’re excited to be joined by Bridget Badoe McQuick, a creative practitioner and storyteller who creates safe, supportive spaces for young people to express themselves honestly and authentically.

Tonight’s session will encourage our girls to explore creativity as a tool for wellbeing, confidence, and self-expression.
