The Purcell Singers is a registered charity.

Formed in 1994 by organist and conductor Mark Ford, The Purcell Singers are an award-winning chamber choir, conducted by Benjamin Kirk, who excel in live performance and studio recording. Our charitable objectives are:

'to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of the art and science of choral music in all its aspects, by the presentation of public concerts an

d recitals and, if possible, by the making of recordings; and other solely charitable objects as defined by The Charities Act 2006, or any subsequent Act as determined from time to time by the Trustees of The Purcell Singers and delivered for the public benefit.'

The Purcell Singers is registered with the Charity Commission under number 1168508.

The Purcell Singers present an uplifting festive programme inspired by Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols. Join the choir and harpist Eleanor Medcalf for a celebration of Christmas fayre from the Renaissance to present day, including traditional carols and modern classics.

The programme also includes carols and other Christmas music, including I Saw Three Ships, Sussex Carol, Jonathan Dove’s The Three Kings, Paul Fincham’s Ring the Bells, In the Bleak Midwinter and more!

🎼What makes this piece so extraordinary?

Elgar divides the choir into two groups. One sings in G major, while the other sings simultaneously in A♭ major—just a semitone apart.

On paper, it sounds impossible - dissonant! In performance, the two keys weave together to create a beautifully ethereal and shimmering sound.

This ingenious musical effect is just one of the many highlights of our summer concert O Mistress Mine on the 10th of July!

Few choirs have the privilege of performing a work written especially for them!

In 2021, John Rutter composed Three Shakespeare Songs for The Purcell Singers, setting three much-loved Shakespeare texts: O Mistress Mine, Be Not Afeard and Sigh No More, Ladies.

Five years on, it remains a very special part of our repertoire. We are delighted to bring this beautiful and characterful work back to the concert platform as part of O Mistress Mine, our summer programme celebrating love, poetry and song.

Join us on 10 July to hear this unique connection between one of Britain’s most beloved composers and The Purcell Singers!
