☀️ Champ's Summer Club! ☀️

At Candlelighters, we're proud to host a variety of groups and events throughout the year, and this summer we've introduced Champ's Summer Club!

Every Friday afternoon throughout the summer holidays, our Family Support Team have been hosting a range of fun activities for all children supported by Candlelighters, including our Super Sibs and VIPs - Very Important Patients!

Each week features a different fun activity, from biscuit decorating to jam sessions with our very own musical maestros, Ryan and Lia. Ryan’s rendition of the Peppa Pig theme tune on the guitar has been a particular hit! 🩷

These sessions are a great opportunity for children, young people and families affected by childhood cancer to relax away from the hospital, recharge, and have some fun together.

If you’d like to join us, these sessions are held every Friday 1 - 3pm. For more information, get in touch with us at [email protected], or give us a call on 0113 887 8333. 💚

💭 “On a sunny April afternoon, we arrived in Ward 10 in Jimmy’s. Nothing can prepare you for walking into a children’s cancer ward for the first time.” - Liz

In 2003, Liz’s daughter, Katherine, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Over 20 years later, Liz now volunteers at Candlelighters, wearing many hats and giving her time to support the fundraising team. Liz shares their story…

“Easter 2003 found our family in hospital with our two-year-old daughter, Katherine, being treated for an infection. This was yet another unusual illness in a series over the previous few weeks.

Test after test was coming back with no conclusion until one morning we were taken into a room where the consultant told us Katherine had leukaemia.

Wham! In the space of a few days, we went from being a family of four, living life to the full, taking for granted our good fortune and health, to one that was to face the next six months with our family fractured.

The medical care for Katherine from nurses, doctors, nutritionists, and other hospital staff was outstanding. But Candlelighters helped us as a family to survive this daunting period mentally.

They provided us with the emotional and other support which helped to make our stay in Jimmy’s (St James’ Hospital) more bearable: a playroom full of toys and playworkers to co-ordinate activities, Jolly and her Trolley, sibling events and short holidays which gave us a chance to be a normal family for those brief periods between treatments. ⛱️

After Katherine started to recover, we started to raise money for Candlelighters as a thank you. Over the years we organised fairs, raffles and donations, but mainly raised money through running. Katherine’s dad, Paul, has run the Great North Run over 20 times and the London Marathon once. Back in 2004, Paul was only one of two people running the Great North Run for Candlelighters - how things have changed!

Over the years we’ve raised over £23,000 for Candlelighters. After 6 months of intense treatment, Katherine’s AML went into remission and has not returned. She is now a senior research scientist developing cancer medicines for a large pharmaceutical company.

As a family, we will always be indebted to Candlelighters. We are honoured to have been part of its 50-year history and to have made a contribution to funds for vital research and improved support to children, young people and families who are affected by childhood cancer.”

Thank you so much to Liz for sharing her family’s story. We’re incredibly proud to have been able to stand side-by-side with families when they needed us over the last 50 years, and it’s all possible because of your support. 💚

This week, we’re shining a spotlight on the team at the RSM UK Leeds office!

The team in Leeds chose to support Candlelighters as their nominated charity in 2026, and what better way to fundraise than helping us to celebrate our 50th anniversary and taking part in our Challenge 50 campaign.

In teams of five, the target was to hit 50,000 steps a day throughout the month of May. With a fantastic 20 teams taking part, that meant over 1 million steps every single day!

💭 “The Candlelighters ‘Challenge 50’ step challenge was a brilliant way to get people active, build teamwork across the office and bring out some healthy competitive spirit, all while making a real difference in our local community. We’ve raised over £2,500 for Candlelighters – vital funding that directly supports children with cancer and their families.” - Sarah Mallinson and Lucy Sheridan, RSM UK, Leeds office.

Thank you so much to the team at RSM UK Leeds for your support and dedication - every step and all of your incredible support helps us to bring comfort and support to families at the most difficult times, as we have been for the last 50 years, and for many more years to come.

Why not take on a Challenge 50 of your own? Big or small, serious or silly, make it your own, just make it 50!

This week, we’re saying a big thank you to 14-year-old Emily for all of her brilliant fundraising for Candlelighters! 👏

At nine years old, Emily was diagnosed with a brain tumour and was supported by Candlelighters, and now she has decided to take on a series of incredible fundraisers for Candlelighters. 🌟

Emily has conquered a 5K inflatable run, organised a Pink It Up day at her school, a school Summer Fayre (which even had a tombola with 76 prizes!), a lucky dip and colouring competition! 🙌

Emily said, “The 5K inflatable run was amazing and really fun! I had a few falls but I didn’t give up, because I knew I had to give children with cancer and brain tumours a brighter future. When I finally reached the end of the run, me, my mum and dad felt a sense of pride!

Pink It Up at school was really fun because I loved how everyone took part and gave generously. Teachers and kids from nursery all the way to year 11 wore a splash of pink!” 🩷

We’re blown away by everything Emily has done to support Candlelighters, and after all her fantastic fundraising, she has raised a grand total of £2298! 👏

Emily also says, “Candlelighters is a great name because it has the word CAN in it, meaning we can beat cancer.” 💚

Thank you so much Emily, your support means that we can continue to be there for children and families!

Recently we were absolutely delighted to launch the new decor in the children’s Haematology and Oncology Day Unit at Leeds Children's Hospital!

The unit had not had any decor updates in 16 years; now the decor features a jungle theme to give a more welcoming and warmer feel for children and families visiting the space during treatment.

Here are some 360° photos so you can explore the transformed space from wherever you are and see the new décor for yourself!

To view the 360° photos:
On a phone 📱: Swipe your finger across the screen to look around, or move your phone physically in different directions.
On a computer 💻: Click your mouse and drag the image left, right, up, or down.
