Children's Heart Surgery Fund supports children and adults born with congenital heart disease across Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. Celebrating a year of support from Welcome Break πŸŽ‰πŸ‘

This year, thanks to the generous support of the Welcome Break Charitable Fund, CHSF has been able to bring heart families together through Cardiac CafΓ©s, family events, wellbeing initiatives and special celebrations for children and young people living with congenital heart disease. As this funding period now comes to an end, we'd like to express our sincere thanks for the difference it has made.

We'd also like to say a special thank you to heart dad Kev Morris (pictured with Ruth), who nominated CHSF for the grant and helped make this support possible.

In July, our Family Support team supported 43 families across the region, providing tailored help to 23 families alongside travel grants, supermarket vouchers and support for young people.

From wellbeing boxes on the wards and and inpatient Cardiac CafΓ© for families to take some time for themselves while in hospital, to keeping in touch and 'touching base' with families after discharge. We were there to help families feel supported and less alone throughout their journey last month because of you.

BEACH DAY WEATHER UPDATE

We have been looking at the weather forecast for Thursday in Scarborough and sadly it is looking a bit rainy and gloomy πŸ™β˜”οΈ

We are still hoping to have a meet up in Scarborough, but we might need to bring the event inside! We'd still love to see as many families as possible, so please do let us know if you would still like to attend as a usual Cardiac Cafe indoors...

One week ago today, five of our young people enjoyed a fantastic day out at the CATCH, Leeds Inner City Farm β˜€οΈπŸ

With the sun shining all day, they got stuck into life on the farm - from sweeping up goat poo and taking the llamas for their afternoon walk to meeting alpacas, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs. There were plenty of laughs along the way and lots of opportunities to spend time together outdoors!

We also enjoyed a delicious lunch in the farm cafΓ© (cooked by the young people who work there) and learnt more about what the farm does for the local community.

The was a great chance for our young people to connect with others living with congenital heart disease, away from appointments and hospital settings, and spend time with people who just 'get it'.

Joining them on the day were CHSF's dedicated Youth Worker, Lu, CHD Transition Nurse Amy, and CHSF's Olivia and Amanda - who all had a fab time too!

A huge thank you to everyone at CATCH Leeds for making us feel so welcome and to all our supporters for giving our young people such a brilliant experience. Days like this are only possible because of you.

Cardiac Nurse Specialist in Calderdale, Paula, popped by the CHSF office this month to collect another batch of KardiaMobile devices, funded because of you.

KardiaMobiles are amazing pieces of kit that connect to a patient's mobile phone - allowing them to take an ECG at home, school, work or wherever they are, and send the results directly to their hospital team.

These devices provide reassurance, help ease anxiety around symptoms and enable heart warriors of all ages to maintain their independence and enjoy everyday life with greater confidence.

A huge thank you to the Jane Tomlinson Appeal for supporting our Family & Youth Support Worker role from July to December this year! πŸŽ‰

Thanks to this funding, we're able to support young people living with congenital heart disease to take part in opportunities like our recent Youth Day at the Farm, where our young people built confidence, developed new skills, made friendships and enjoyed trying new experiences with other's who just 'get it'.

We're incredibly grateful to JTA for helping us continue this vital work and create opportunities that help young people feel supported, connected and empowered. Thank you Jane Tomlinson Appeal!

5 𝗺𝗢𝗹𝗹𝗢𝗼𝗻 steps. Β£5,500 raised. Let's hear it for ! πŸ‘πŸ₯Ύ

Throughout July, the teams at Fenton Packaging Solutions and Fenton Labelling Solutions took on the huge challenge of walking 5 million steps to raise money for Children's Heart Surgery Fund.

Inspired by the network of children's heart surgery and cardiology centres across the UK and Ireland, their virtual 'Little Hearts Tour' saw them "travel" between specialist hospitals in Leeds, Belfast, Dublin, Glasgow, London and beyond, before returning home to Leeds.

The challenge held special meaning for the team too. One colleague underwent heart surgery as a child at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital, making Oxford a poignant stop on their route and a reminder of the life-changing care that children and families depend on every day.

Thanks to their determination, teamwork and support they have raised an incredible Β£5,500 for CHSF! πŸŽ‰πŸ‘

Thank you to Hols from North Star Coffee Roasters and heart mum Charlotte, who popped along to Ward 51 on Wednesday to help with our Wellbeing Trolley β˜•οΈπŸͺπŸ›’

The sisters have a special connection to Children’s Heart Surgery Fund. Charlotte's son Billy was born in October 2023 with a rare and serious congenital heart condition and was emergency transferred to Leeds Children's Hospital shortly after birth. Billy faced a challenging start to life, undergoing urgent heart surgery at just a few weeks old, followed by further complex surgery when he was eight months old.

During the family's long hospital stay, CHSF provided support when they needed it most. Now thriving at home, Billy is a happy, active little boy and Charlotte is passionate about giving back to other families facing similar journeys.

Hols, who owns North Star Coffee Roasters, recently opened a new cafΓ© on Great George Street in Leeds. Inspired by Charlotte and Billy’s story, she wanted to support families spending time in hospital with a seriously ill child, helping ensure they have access to great coffee and a welcoming space close to the hospital during difficult days on the ward.

This week Charlotte and Hols were delighted to give something back to the families currently on the children's heart ward (Ward L51) and the hospital community that supported them through Billy’s heart journey.
