Together Women Project

Together Women Project Together Women are a charitable organisation, working to support women and girls across the North of England.

Together Women Project (TWP) was established in December 2006 with funding from the Ministry of Justice, to develop and test a new gender-specific community approach to women with convictions and women at risk of entering the criminal justice system. Following a highly successful demonstration phase, TWP became an independent charity in April 2009. Our service model is flexible, responsive and dynamic. TWP moves women out of crime and into positive futures by working with them to build resilience and develop strengths that enable them to move away from damaging lifestyles in safe women-only spaces. We operate services throughout Yorkshire and Humberside from our City Centre bases in Bradford, Hull, Leeds and Sheffield, and outreach services for women in Barnsley, Rotherham and New Hall and Askham Grange prison. As well as direct services operated by TWP our centres are used by other local agencies ensuring that multiple needs can be addressed holistically. This ‘one-stop-shop’ approach guarantees that everything a woman needs can be offered in one central location.

According to data from Solace Women's Aid, 10x more women are sleeping rough in England and Wales than official figures show.

With the government's recent commitment to offer a route off the streets for everyone by Christmas, we must know and understand the real figures.

The Women's Rough Sleeping Census is specially designed to include women who may fall through the cracks of official figures. To best protect their safety, many women opt to sleep in hospitals and on busses rather than on the street.

The data collected this week by organisations like ours will shape future decisions about homelessness for women, and what support and services are funded. If women are missing from the data, they're missing from the support too.

Today is Su***de Prevention Day 2026. 💜

Enquiries into disproportionate levels of su***de and self-harm inside women’s prisons were the reason Together Women was created as a pilot project. Twenty years later, we’re still seeing devastating levels of self-inflicted deaths and self-harm in our prisons.

Behind every statistic is a woman.

A woman living with poor mental health. A mother separated from her children. A survivor of domestic abuse. A woman living in poverty, experiencing addiction, held on remand or serving a short sentence for a low-level, non-violent offence.

These challenges are rarely isolated. They are often deeply connected, and too many women enter the criminal justice system carrying years of trauma, disadvantage and unmet need.

Supporting women in the community is su***de prevention.

Despite making up just 4% of England and Wales' prison population, women account for 28% of incidents of self-harm.

This figure is not an unfortunate one-off statistic, but the reality of a prison system that has been failing women for decades.

At Together Women, we continue to evidence the effectiveness of supporting women in the community over sending them to prison. That way they can address the root causes of their offending and regain control of their lives.

Women who work with us are less likely to offend, reoffend less frequently and take longer to reoffend.
