We wanted to share some pictures of our World Homeless Week retail activities! Yesterday, at our Roundhay shop we had tombola on all day, and name the bear, with all proceedings going towards The Crypt's operations!

We also had a sneak peek at what our Armley store has put on today, so if you are based near Armley, our last day of shop activities (and delicious home bakes), are on all day today - so head down and see what we have in store!

Even just visiting our store, browsing or chatting to a member of staff or volunteer spreads the World Homeless Day message by educating others and getting the community involved. So please feel free to do so today in Armley, or if you're in Leeds City Centre tomorrow (Saturday 10th), pop by St. John's Centre and learn more about what we do! 💚

Today, following our lunchtime service, we gathered together in our Assisi Café for our Holy Communion Harvest Service.

Staff, volunteers and clients joined together for a small service of gratitude, taking time to reflect on the many things we have to be thankful for.

In particular, we gave thanks for the food, finances and oxygen that we receive so generously every single day — gifts that can so easily be taken for granted, but which are vital to our lives and our work.

The service was jointly led by our Chaplain, Revd. Andy Muckle, and Revd. Jon Swales from the Lighthouse Community, who reminded us of just how blessed we are by the generosity of so many people who support St. George’s Crypt.

Today was a wonderful opportunity to pause, reflect and give thanks for our community, our supporters and all those who help make our work possible.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support St. George’s Crypt.

We've told you what World Homeless Day is and what it means, but we haven't told you how you can help...

The main aim of World Homeless Day is to raise awareness about homelessness in your local area. Sharing this post to your feeds will enable more people to see our page, the work that we do and help grow our online presence to continue helping those in need.

We also have lots of openings for volunteering at our charity shops, as well as tickets for events for you to participate in, and opportunities for giving donations of all kinds. After sharing and spreading the word yourself, you can physically get involved with our company through donating and shopping at our charity shops, volunteering within any of our departments with openings or just simply liking this post.

Last month, we shared the story of a man who had faced years of challenges and vulnerability. At the time, he wished to remain anonymous. Today, with determination and support, he is ready to share his story.

We couldn’t be happier to announce that Dan is moving into his own property!

After almost two years living in our supported accommodation at Kirkstall Lodge, and a few years in Regent Lodge, Dan is taking an incredible step towards independent living and a brighter future.

As we mark World Homeless Day this week, stories like Dan’s remind us that homelessness is about so much more than not having a roof over your head. Behind every person experiencing homelessness is an individual with their own story and challenges.

During his time with us, Dan has made some life changing progress. After struggling with alcohol for much of his life and experiencing a number of health issues as a result, he has now managed to stop drinking and says he feels so much better, both physically and mentally.

With the right support around him, including attending meetings with 5 Ways in Leeds, Dan has been able to get back on track and start rebuilding his life.

“I’m going to miss this place and everything they’ve done for me. I feel more set up to move into this property.”

A huge part of Dan’s journey has been the dedication of our support team, and particularly Ranae, who has worked tirelessly alongside him.

Ranae explains:

“When Dan came to us, he didn’t have any ID, so that’s been a long process we’ve been working on. That was a big factor in him not being able to get a house. Now he has one, I’m just trying to set him up for independence. We’ve all worked together to get him where he needs to be. I’m so proud of him and so happy for him.”

And the support doesn’t stop when Dan leaves Kirkstall Lodge.

As he moves into his new home, Ranae will help put additional support in place, including an Engage Support Worker, who will carry out welfare checks and make sure Dan is settling in safely. They’ll also help him set up his bills and get to know his new local area.

This is what supported accommodation is all about, helping people move forward, regain independence and build a life they can be proud of.

Without dedicated people like Ranae and the wider team at Kirkstall Lodge, stories like Dan’s wouldn’t be possible.

After years of struggling, Dan finally has a place he can call home and the opportunity to begin the next chapter of his life. 💚

A huge thank you to everyone at Kirkstall Lodge for their continued dedication to helping others and making a real difference in people’s lives.

World Homeless Day is on the 10th of October, let’s remember that everyone deserves the opportunity to have somewhere safe to call home.

On October 10th every year, we celebrate World Homeless Day - a day where we raise awareness and bring people's attentions to the needs of their local homeless communities. But one day simply isn't enough. Following on from our week-long takeover last year - we are back again, sharing all the information you need to know in how to support your local community. 💚

First, a bit about us. We are a charity based in Leeds City Centre, who have been supporting unhoused individuals since 1930. Since then, we have grown a lot - unfortunately, to meet demand. Every year, the number of homeless people increases, meaning we need more resources, staff, volunteers and donations to keep us able to support the growing demand.

Although we begun as a place of refuge to receive a hot meal, we are so much more than that now. We provide clothing, meals, showers and beds to those who need it. Alongside offering access to healthcare, education and rehabilitation based on a person's individual needs. We follow a clear pathway from the moment someone steps through our doors, which ends with their ability to live independently, with a roof over their head. 🛌

So this week, we are striving to tell you more and more about what we do, what you can do and share stories of those who may have experienced homelessness themselves... Stay tuned for more!

Last week, the ladies in our Growing Rooms programme wanted to showcase some outfits you can get at our charity shops for under £10 - shoes included!

One aspect of our Growing Rooms Ladies rehabilitation programme involves our ladies volunteering, some of which get involved in our charity shops, so who better to pick us out some outfits than the pros themselves!

We have four charity shops around Leeds (Morley, Pudsey, Armley and Roundhay) where we have an abundance of lovely items for you to upgrade your wardrobes! And the best part is that every thing purchased goes directly towards helping homeless and vulnerable people in Leeds. Bad Penny?

Why am I here? It is not an existential question or a case of Tuesday afternoon maudlin self-reflection, it is a question of God’s timing. Many years ago I came here as a ordinand (trainee vicar, or ‘vicarling’ in my funny vernacular), and spent a month working with the previous chaplain. In fact I even made the dizzy heights of being a passing reference in one of his wonderful books about life here. It was a month that changed my life in so many ways and continues to do still to this day. Fast forward through the years of curacy (mini-vicar) and incumbent (real vicar) and here I am back up north, the proverbial bad penny, loving my role as Chaplain to the Crypt (vicar of the Crypt, ‘Father’, ‘Andy’, ‘Dave’ and occasionally a few other names that you wouldn’t use in front of your Mother).

It all started with that month changing the beds in the hub, helping in the kitchen and praying in the chapel. Still to this day we are blessed with ordinands from local vicar and lay minister schools, and one of my former placement students is now Chaplain to Growing Rooms (our addiction recovery programme), so the wheel of life really does come full circle. There is one consistent thing placement students say and that is working here is life changing, and it is, it always has been, and it always will be. Wherever you have come from, your journey on won’t be the same. One of the privileges of being a placement supervisor is seeing the journey our students go on from being slightly unsure of the dynamics of the dining room and chapel to leading chapel with confidence and treating our friends at lunchtime…like friends.

One of my first placement students when I returned was someone who lacked a wee bit of confidence and I remember well his first day when his first experience of a passionate chapel conversation left him looking like a turkey facing Christmas. By the end of his time here, he was truly part of the team, leading chapel with aplomb and he made this old chaplain’s day, when he spontaneously popped back to the Crypt when he was travelling through Leeds one day, just to say hello. You might leave the Crypt, but the Crypt never leaves you, and you never know, like the current Chaplain, you might just end up back here, like a bad penny!

Remembering Taranjit Singh Bambhrah, Our Friend, “T” ❤️

T was one of those remarkable people who had a wonderful gift for making everyone feel welcome from the moment they walked through the door. Whether you had been volunteering at St George’s Crypt for years or were joining us for the very first time on a Sunday evening, T had a way of making you feel that you belonged.

He gave his time freely and joyfully, helping to prepare meals for those who needed them most. He served with kindness, good humour and a smile that could brighten even the busiest evening.

Of course, T was also famous for a few unforgettable quirks! 😄

Somehow, whenever the washing up began, he had an uncanny ability to disappear at exactly the right moment, a talent that became something of a running joke among the volunteer team!

Then there were his legendary pizza trays. If there was cheese to melt, there was every chance T would leave his unmistakable signature by burning it firmly onto the trays, much to everyone’s amusement, except perhaps the volunteer left soaking them afterwards!

And who could forget his equally legendary gravy? Rich? Perhaps. Memorable? Certainly. The perfect finishing touch to a meal? Well… opinions varied! Many asked him for the recipe, but thankfully, he kept that particular secret to himself. (Secret revealed in photo) 😉

Behind the laughter, however, was a man of deep faith and immense compassion.

T’s Sikh faith shaped the way he lived his life. It inspired his commitment to selfless service, generosity, kindness and respect for others. He was a devoted family man whose love for his family was evident in everything he did, and everyone who knew him witnessed the warmth and humility that defined his character.

T will be remembered not only for the meals he helped prepare, but for the friendship he offered, the laughter he shared, and the countless acts of kindness that made such a difference to those around him.

His legacy lives on in the memories we cherish, the people he encouraged, and the example he set of serving others with love and humility.

As we reflect on Harvest and the blessings God gives us, we give thanks for people like T whose life reminds us that one of the greatest gifts we can offer is ourselves in service to others.

T will be greatly missed, fondly remembered, and will always remain a treasured part of the St George’s Crypt family.

We want to say a massive thank you to all those who participated in Second Hand September! We want you to take this time to reflect on anything you may have learned, and think of everything you've purchased second hand in the past month and how incredible the effects of those purchases are. 💚

Our retail stores massively support our organisation and without people striving to buy second hand, we would lose that support, so a massive thank you to those who both participated, and shopped at one of our Leeds shops.
