Ashlar house was fortunate to enjoy some of the sunny weather last month by hosting a BBQ for residents. The event was organised to provide an opportunity for residents, former residents, and staff to come together, socialise, and strengthen relationships.

The gathering came at a particularly significant time following the recent and very sad passing of one of Ashlar house's residents. The loss had a profound impact on many of the residents. After discussions with those living at the service, it was agreed that the BBQ should still go ahead, and attendees were grateful that it did.

The afternoon provided a safe and supportive space for people to come together, reflect, and openly discuss their thoughts and feelings about the loss and the impact it had on them. Residents shared conversations about their mental health, emotions, and experiences of grief, supporting one another through a difficult time. The event also created opportunities to focus on hope, future aspirations, and the goals they would like to achieve moving forward.

Throughout the day, the former resident remained in everyone's thoughts. Attendees shared memories, enjoyed a little singing and dancing, and celebrated the sense of connection and support that exists within the Ashlar community. The glorious weather provided a fitting backdrop to an afternoon of reflection, remembrance, and togetherness.

O God make speed to save us…

O God make speed to save us
O Lord make haste to help us

I saw my wife jump in front of the train…

O God make speed to save us
O Lord make haste to help us

I got stabbed eleven times…

O God make speed to save us
O Lord make haste to help us

I haven’t seen my children for months…

O God make speed to save us
O Lord make haste to help us

I can’t do this anymore…

O God make speed to save us
O Lord make haste to help us

I might as well be dead…

O God make speed to save us
O Lord make haste to help us

When all seems lost…

O God make speed to save us
O Lord make haste to help us

In a kind and gentle hand…

O God make speed to save us
O Lord make haste to help us

In the comfort of strangers…

O God make speed to save us
O Lord make haste to help us

Through the prayers of the Saints…

O God make speed to save us
O Lord make haste to help us

Through God’s unending mercy…

O God make speed to save us
O Lord make haste to help us

The flowers in The Crypt garden are bloomin’ marvellous!

John and our dedicated volunteers continue to work hard to make this space not only beautiful, but also a haven for local insect life and ecosystems.

The garden provides a peaceful retreat for staff, volunteers, and residents alike; a quiet and beautiful spot in the heart of Leeds where people can take a moment to reflect and recharge.

We hope the garden offers our clients a place to find peace amid beauty, even during the most challenging times in their lives. In many ways, the garden reflects the work of The Crypt itself: a place of care, patience, and nurturing, where people can grow, heal, and move from a place of chaos towards hope and recovery.

As part of our summer "Fledglings Learn to Fly" campaign, we sat down with Simon, who now works as a Support Worker at our newest development, Don Robins House.

Simon became homeless in 2017 after 35 years of addiction. In desperate need of help, he came to St. George’s Crypt after clinically ā€œdyingā€ from a drug overdose. Speaking candidly about his experiences, Simon shared how his journey, once marked by hardship and loss, is now filled with hope, purpose, and joy.

We hope Simon’s story demonstrates why the work of St. George’s Crypt is so important to the many people who come through our doors seeking support.

Every day, we are working to save lives. Not everyone who comes to us chooses to engage, but for those who do, we are there every step of the way. We help rebuild confidence, provide practical and emotional support, and empower people to move towards independence, until they are ready to take that next step and, like Simon, learn to fly on their own.
