For many people, a lack of confidence in using public transport can be a major barrier to independence, social connection, and access to opportunities.

As part of , we're highlighting how Travel Connections (funded by the Motability Foundation) is helping people with disabilities gain the skills and confidence to travel independently. Delivered in partnership with TCV Hollybush, the programme supports participants with everything from journey planning to travelling together by bus, helping them explore their city with greater confidence.

Recently, the Hollybush Days Out group visited Rodley Nature Reserve. For many, it was their first time there. A guided tour, birdwatching session, and the chance to spot nesting baby owls on a live monitor made it a memorable day out, with many already planning to return with family and friends.

When people have the confidence and support to travel independently, the benefits reach far beyond the journey itself. Accessible transport helps reduce social isolation, strengthens community connections, and gives people greater freedom to take part in the activities and experiences that matter to them.

Our Friendly Communities Team (Age Friendly Leeds & Dementia Friendly Leeds) visited Armley Helping Hands this week to deliver a combined session featuring our Wise Up to Ageism training and the Dementia Friends initiative.

Staff and volunteers from local businesses, care homes, and medical centres came together, and as a result, we now have 32 new Ambassadors ready to support older people across the Armley area!

These sessions are currently free for our Age and Dementia Friendly businesses in Leeds and are invaluable for staff teams, whether you're a third-sector organisation, private business, or service. Visit the link in the comments and sign up your organisation today so we can help make Leeds an Age and Dementia Friendly city.

Have Your Say on Staying Active in Leeds

We are looking for local people to take part in a friendly focus group to help shape a new citywide campaign. The aim is to support people to become more active, improve strength and balance, and help prevent falls.

We would like to hear your views on:

What helps you stay active
What puts you off exercising
What would motivate you to move more

We are especially keen to hear from:

Women aged 45–60
Men aged 40–55
People approaching retirement
People who do not currently exercise much

Sessions will be relaxed and informal, with 10–12 people per group.

Participants will receive a £20 voucher as a thank you for taking part.

To register your interest, please contact Tony Mullin via email: [email protected]

Please feel free to share this information with anyone who may be interested.

Leeds Hospitals Charity has funded a two-year pilot to improve the experience of people with dementia attending Hospital Emergency Departments.

The pilot will introduce two simple but effective interventions:

- A Forget‑Me‑Not lanyard, acting as a clear visual identifier to discreetly alert staff that a patient may have additional needs
- A tote bag, designed to help reduce distress, provide reassurance and offer gentle distraction. Items include a comb, tissues, a notepad, a pen, an activity book and colouring pencils.

Inspired by the success of the Learning Disability and Autism care bags, Alison Raycraft, Lead Nurse for Older People and the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Dementia Steering Group, came up with the idea for the project with input from people living with dementia, carers and frontline staff, helping to ensure it is practical, sensitive and informed by lived experience.

“We want patients with dementia and their families or carers to feel supported from the moment they arrive at A&E to the point of discharge.

“By providing every patient with a lanyard and some patients with a tote bag, we can help staff recognise patients’ needs more quickly, improve communication and reduce anxiety for both patients and carers. Patients will be able to take the lanyard home and bring it to any future hospital visits.

“We hope that this pilot will show us how small initiatives like this can create moments that matter for patients and ensure that staff can provide compassionate, patient-centred care.”

Changes to Memory Support Worker Service in Leeds

Memory Support Workers employed by the Alzheimer’s Society, under contract from Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT), support people after they have been diagnosed with dementia. They help them and their carers to understand the diagnosis, access timely support, and maintain independence for as long as possible.

Following a review, LYPFT has decided to bring the service in-house and integrate it into its wider Older People’s Service and Memory Assessment Service pathways. This change came into effect from 1 June 2026.

Public access to the service (self-referrals) can still be made via the MSW duty desk by calling 0113 231 1727 or by emailing [email protected]. Alternatively, members of the public can contact their GP.
