Live Music Now Scotland

Live Music Now Scotland Supporting talented emerging musicians while making music accessible to everyone in Scotland.

Live Music Now was founded by legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin in 1977, along with his close friend and philanthropist, Sir Ian Stoutzker. During the Second World War, Yehudi Menuhin played for the Allied Forces, often in the most challenging of circumstances, and directly experienced how music could benefit those who were sick, lonely, traumatised and reconcile differences between people and na

tions. Live Music Now was born out of these wartime experiences. No matter where Live Music Now operates, it continues to keep alive Yehudi Menuhin’s vision of music being accessible to all members of society, regardless of their circumstances, while simultaneously developing the skills of young, talented musicians.

Live Music Now extended to Scotland in 1984, putting on 60 concerts in its first year with a handful of classical ensembles. Almost 40 years later, that number has increased 10-fold to over 600, with an ever-evolving pool of around 120 musicians, covering a diverse range of musical genres, delivering work in all of Scotland’s 32 local authorities. Initially a branch of Live Music Now Ltd, the organisation devolved in 2013 to have its own charitable status and Board of trustees, bringing governance closer to home as activity continued to grow.

Hundreds of musicians have come through Live Music Now Scotland, and can now be seen in orchestras, ensembles, choirs, opera companies, recording studies and educational institutions, pursuing successful careers in the music profession. Alongside this, our expertise and understanding of how music is vital to emotional, physical and social well-being have grown over the years, and the organisation is well established and highly respected in this field.

Our partnership with PRISMA in Mexico continues this summer as we welcome musician Nabani Aguilar and PRISMA founder Morgan Szymanski to Scotland.

Building on recent exchange residencies by LMNS musicians Isla Ratcliff and Roo Geddes, the visit celebrates the sharing of musical traditions, ideas and cultures across borders.

Through song and the traditional Mexican jarana, Nabani brings the sounds of Son Jarocho and Son Huasteco traditions, creating a vibrant dialogue between Latin American and trad Scottish folk music.

Alongside performances at venues including the National Galleries of Scotland, the visit will also include outreach concerts in care home settings. Nabani and Morgan will be joined by Isla and Roo, reconnecting musicians who have taken part in this growing international partnership.

Recently, our musicians came together for a day of Early Years CPD training with Dr Rachel Drury and Starcatchers' Amy Gibson.

Through discussion, reflection and plenty of shared learning, we explored child-led practice, play-based approaches, and what meaningful musical experiences can look like for babies, young children and the adults in their lives.

A thoughtful, inspiring day filled with conversation, curiosity, a shared belief in the power of connection, play and belonging... and plenty of music too. 🎶💛

Thank you to Rachel and Amy for a fantastic session, and to our musicians for making this day so rewarding. Shout out to the Scottish Music Centre for hosting us.

As part of Dementia Action Week, an important initiative by Alzheimer's Society, we’ve been reflecting on a recent afternoon at the Dementia Café at V&A Dundee with LMNS musicians Matthew Kilner and Kevin Henderson.

With jazz tunes filling the room, cups of tea on the tables and even a little dancing along the way, it was a lovely afternoon to be part of.

Here are a few photos from the day, alongside a short blog reflecting on the visit and the welcoming atmosphere created by Alzheimer Scotland’s Dementia Café.
