Over 759,000 people in Scotland provide unpaid care to an individual with disability, illness, or frailty. And as the population ages, this number is likely to increase.

But despite how common unpaid care is, carers often feel invisible and unsupported. Our national survey of carers from all geographic areas of Scotland found that many carers report strains on their careers, mental health, and finances.

Our Scotland Cares report calls for more responsive national and local support systems that provide clear information, mental health support, and financial security to unpaid carers.

Today, we publish the Scotland Cares report, which underscores the urgent need for more responsive support systems for unpaid carers.

At least 759,000 people in Scotland provide unpaid care to at least one individual with illness, disability, or frailty; their contribution is worth and estimated £15.9 billion annually to Scotland’s economy.

However, our national survey of carers shows many unpaid experience profound impacts on their career development, personal relationships, and mental wellbeing.

We call on National and Local authorities in Scotland to reimagine support for Scotland’s unpaid carers. Scotland must ensure carers are properly recognised for their contributions and given clear information, mental health services and financial security.
