One year ago, the First Minister announced an end to Scottish Enterprise funding for arms companies linked to countries where there was a ‘plausible risk of genocide.’

One year ago, vital questions about the implementation of this policy remain unanswered.

People in Scotland deserve more than smoke and mirrors. It’s full for full transparency and accountability.

The Scottish Government’s Programme for Government was published today and failed to commit to bringing forward the Human Rights Bill in the first year of this Parliament. Instead, it will be introduced in 2027/28.

This is a missed opportunity to put human rights at the heart of this government’s agenda. It is now incumbent upon the Scottish Government to use the coming year to make the Bill a genuine priority across government so that, when introduced, it is as ambitious and far-reaching as it should be.

First Minister, it's time to deliver.

Bring forward the Human Rights Bill within the first year of the new Scottish Parliament.

Scotland needs a Human Rights Bill to enshrine people’s everyday rights into law – so everyone can live with dignity.

Amnesty International stands with everyone who has experienced racist and Islamophobic hatred and violence in recent incidents across Scotland.

These incidents have not taken place in a vacuum. We must reject and resist the racist and Islamophobic tropes and narratives that are becoming ever-more visible in our public discourse, including from some politicians in Scotland.

And we must reject the use of language that scapegoats entire groups of people and pits the rights of some communities against others.

We simply cannot allow the normalisation of this kind of deeply cynical and hateful politics.

The First Minister was elected on a manifesto that committed to a Human Rights Bill. It is now time to deliver, by bringing forward the Bill in the first year of the new parliamentary session.

There can be no more waiting. Scotland needs the Human Rights Bill.

The SNP have been elected as the largest party at Holyrood. With a Human Rights Bill being an SNP manifesto commitment, it must now be delivered.

There can be no more waiting around for the action that people across Scotland need. The Human Rights Bill simply cannot wait any longer.

The First Minister must show the world the values Scotland believes in, by putting human rights at the heart of his new government and committing to bringing forward the Human Rights Bill in the first year of the new Parliament.
