Fresh Start provides a range of services that support the resettlement of homeless people in the community.

Introducing our new Fresh Rooms Service Coordinator - meet Pippa! 💙

We’re excited to share that we recently welcomed a new member to the Fresh Start team. Pippa joins us as a Service Coordinator, working alongside Caitlin and the wonderful Fresh Rooms volunteers to coordinate and take part in our Fresh Rooms service. Having joined us only a short time ago, she's already doing such great work - we're lucky to have her!

When asked what she’s loving most so far about working at Fresh Start, Pippa said:

"Since joining Fresh Start the team have all made me feel like I belong. Everyone really cares about their work and will step in to help each other out any way they can. I really enjoy how practical and varied each day is, and I get to hear people's stories, help service users choose paint colours to make their house feel like home, and work with incredible volunteers who devote so much time and talent to helping others."

⭐ Staff Spotlight: Gayle ⭐

As the end of June approaches, we're shining a spotlight on Gayle, our incredible Warehouse and Pantry Volunteer Coordinator! Joining the team just over 4 years ago, Gayle ensures that our Starter Pack and Pantry services run smoothly, and gets things where they need to go - into the hands of those moving on from homelessness. She's known within the team for her kind and friendly personality, her love of a cheese platter and her dedication to helping those in need 🫶

Gayle says that she "didn't really know about Fresh Start until I started volunteering in the gardening service and the pantry." Through her volunteering sessions, she learnt more about what we do, and wanted to get more involved, saying "I could see how much we actually help people - that really inspired me." As our Warehouse and Pantry Volunteer Coordinator, Gayle works closely with both our staff team and our wonderful volunteers, keeping things stocked and sorted in the Pantry, and coordinating our Starter Pack service 🙌

As part of her role, Gayle often interacts directly with our service users, which gives her a unique view of the impact of our work. "I find it so sad when I speak to people who have been given keys to a tenancy which has absolutely nothing in it, basically just a shell, no bed to sleep in or sofa to sit on" she says. "Although we're not able to provide the furniture, we can supply essentials, which makes a huge difference to someone when they're just starting out or moving on from homelessness. Getting to be part of this process and sometimes helping deliver the items myself means I see the impact first hand - it's a wonderful feeling to be part of that."

Thank you, Blackhall Brownies!🙌

Last month, the Brownies invited Fresh Start along to one of their sessions, to share more about the work we do to support people moving on from homelessness in Edinburgh.

The Brownies went on to organise and host a Bring and Buy Sale which raised a fantastic £218.24! They enjoyed going to Sainsbury's to spend the proceeds on items for our Starter Packs, choosing items they thought would help people feel at home in their new tenancies - such as bedding, blankets and boxes of cutlery.

We were pleased to hear that the Brownies achieved their Fundraising Badge through supporting Fresh Start - congratulations! 🎉

Thank you for your support 🫶

Last Thursday, we hosted Quiz For Good in partnership with Goose's Quizzes and The Hoxton, Edinburgh. It was a wonderful evening, and we want to thank everyone who came along, got involved and joined in to support those in Edinburgh moving on from homelessness. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

We’re proud to share that the event raised over £1200 - an incredible result 🎉

Special congratulations to the team from Atmos Consulting for their 1st place finish, and commiserations to the rest of the field - hopefully winning some of our amazing (and generously donated!) raffle prizes helped soften the blow!

Join us at the Armed Forces Community: Big Day Out! ☀️

Come along to the Craiglockhart Campus of Edinburgh Napier University on Saturday 20th June for a day of family fun, music and activities! The event is free to attend, offering information stalls, a children's treasure hunt, dog show and talent competition, mocktail making and much more!

Help Us Prevent School Holiday Hunger! 🎒

Many families across Edinburgh rely on free school meals during term time to help make ends meet, but when the school holidays arrive, the food bill goes up straight away. The Fresh Start Community Pantry offers family memberships (available 6th July - 14 August) to help bridge the gap while children are home for the holidays, but the increased demand often leaves our storeroom running dangerously low 😓

You can help support the Community Pantry over the summer holidays by donating non-perishable food items - every donation, big or small, regular or a once-off, makes a difference 🙌 The full list of items accepted by the pantry + information on where and when donations can be dropped off, can be found on our website: https://ow.ly/aTJ050ZaqrZ

It's almost time to Quiz For Good! ⏰

This Thursday, join us for a fun-filled evening of friendly competition at The Hoxton, Edinburgh, in aid of those moving on from homelessness in Edinburgh 🙌

Doors open at 5pm and the quiz, hosted by the brilliant Goose's Quizzes, kicks off at 6pm - trust us, you don't want to miss it! We'll also be running a raffle on the night, with some incredible prizes up for grabs, including VIP tickets to see Jungle at the OVO Hydro! 🎟️

And if that's not enough - stick around after the quiz to catch the opening match of the World Cup!⚽️

Shoutout to Forthview Primary School 🌟

The Primary 7s at Forthview Primary School recently hosted a Bingo Night fundraiser in support of Fresh Start - raising a fantastic £166!🎉

The class split into committees to organise their event; setting up the hall, hosting the Bingo, and even doing their own catering with hot dogs and toasties.

The money raised will be used to fund our services, from supporting our Fresh Rooms team in transforming new homes to stocking the shelves in our Community Pantry.

We're so grateful for the hard work of the Primary 7s - thank you for your support! 💙
