A familiar face returns to the Liversage Trust.

It was a pleasure to welcome architect Paul McLocklin back to our London Road almshouses today. Paul joined our General Manager, Andy Mellors, and Site Manager, Steve Wooddisse, to take a look at the ongoing restoration works.

Paul’s connection with the Trust dates back to 1976, when, as a young architect with T.H. Thorpe & Partners, he worked on the refurbishment of our Nottingham Road Estate.

Over the years, he went on to contribute to several more projects for the Trust, including the award-winning conversion of the former Liversage Arms public house into six apartments.

Now retired, Paul continues to play an active role in Derby’s architectural and heritage community and is currently Chair of Derby City Council’s Conservation and Heritage Advisory Committee.

Almost 50 years after first working with the Trust, it was wonderful to welcome Paul back and give him the opportunity to see how our restoration work is progressing.

Meet Reggie
Hi everyone, I’m Reggie, a fabulous 11½-year-old Cairn Terrier.

My family rescued me when I was just six months old, and I’ve been living my best life ever since. I had a brother called Pip who sadly passed away, but I now have another rescue sister, Dolly, who you’ll also see popping up on Facebook. She’s very cute… almost as cute as me.

My human works for the Liversage Trust, so I thought it was about time I made an appearance too.

A few of my favourite things are treats, cheese (especially cheese), chasing rats and playing with my favourite soft ball that looks just like a bumblebee.

I do have a dodgy leg, but that doesn’t stop me running around and having fun with Dolly. My humans look after me really well, and I’m pretty sure there’s some sort of special joint supplement hidden in my cheese.

Now, there are a few things I’m not so keen on. Car journeys are definitely NOT my thing – my humans have even bought me a special travel bowl to try and make them more bearable.

I also have a very special talent… I can predict the rain! If I start barking outside, I can guarantee you that it’ll be raining a few minutes later. You’re welcome.

Baths? Absolutely not. But when my human dad gets the hosepipe out, that’s a different story. Now THAT’S fun.

My humans also love dressing me up in fancy costumes. I’m not sure I always appreciate it, but I’ll let you be the judge of whether I look handsome.

So that’s me, Reggie – a cheeky, lovable little chap who’s still full of character at 11½.

Give me a treat, a bumblebee ball and a bit of cheese, and I’m one happy boy.

A glimpse into life 296 years ago…

Imagine keeping track of your household finances in 1730 - no spreadsheets, no online banking, just a beautifully handwritten ledger.

We recently came across this fascinating page from one of our historic rent books, dating from 1730–1731. It records rents owed by a number of tenants, giving us a wonderful glimpse into the people and properties connected with the Trust nearly 300 years ago.

Among the names recorded are Godfrey Topley, Mr Toone, Mr Eaton, Mr Greatorex, Joseph Ward and Mr Cockayne.

The rents were generally due twice a year, at Lady Day (25 March) and Michaelmas (29 September) - dates that were traditionally important in the agricultural and financial calendar.

Some of the half-yearly rents recorded on this page include:

Godfrey Topley – £3 5s
Mr Toone – £3
Mr Eaton – £1 10s
Mr Greatorex – £2 10s
Joseph Ward – £2 5s
Mr Cockayne – £2 5s

There are also calculations for interest on outstanding principal money, showing that even in the 18th century, keeping track of debts and interest was very much part of everyday financial life.

One of the things we love about historic documents like this is that they aren't just old pieces of paper. They contain the names of real people who lived, worked and rented homes nearly three centuries ago.
And perhaps the most intriguing question of all is… where exactly were these properties, and what were those homes like?

We may never be able to answer all the questions hidden within these old pages, but each document gives us another little piece of the story.

Meet Trixie

Hi everyone, I’m Trixie, a gorgeous 10-year-old Staffie.

Back in 2019, I was taken into foster care. I was pregnant, very timid and never even been out for a proper walk. I had been living in a flat with another Staffie and was kept in a crate.

But my foster family soon discovered that underneath my nervousness was a lovely, friendly girl - and, well… they simply couldn’t give me up! So I found my forever home.

I’ve had quite an exciting life since then. I recently retired, along with my human (who lives on the Keys Street Estate) and also worked for the Ministry of Defence, where I spent my days in the office waiting patiently for a long line of soldiers to give me fuss and attention. I also loved playing in the field outside the office with all their dogs.

Now I’m 10, I’ve slowed down a little, but I still absolutely love going away to the seaside with my family.

And do you know what? Treats don’t really interest me. My favourite thing in the whole world is people - especially children.

I do have one little habit my family is trying to stop me from… I get very excited when I see babies and try to jump up to have a peek inside prams and pushchairs. My family keeps reminding me that not everyone is as enthusiastic about dogs as I am.

So that’s me - Trixie. Ten years young, full of love, and still happiest when surrounded by people.

Who remembers our old logo?

Before our current logo, there was this familiar design that was part of our identity for more than 40 years (or longer).

For decades, our original logo appeared on everything from letters and documents to signage. It became a familiar part of the organisation and will no doubt bring back memories for some of our residents, colleagues and former employees.

Then, in 2018, we underwent a rebrand and introduced our new logo, giving our identity a fresh and more modern look.

But how old was the original logo?

We know it dates back at least 40 years, but we're still trying to pinpoint exactly when it was first introduced.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday 25 September, between 12pm and 2pm, for our Macmillan Coffee Morning.

It was a lovely afternoon with soup and a drink enjoyed by everyone who came along. We were also treated to a fantastic dance performance from Poss+Abilities.

Thanks to the generosity of everyone who attended and supported us, we raised a fantastic £240.90 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

A big thank you to everyone who donated, helped out, enjoyed the soup and drink, and came along to support this very worthwhile cause.

Ever wondered what the Trust's Estates Committee was discussing more than 135 years ago?

We've been delving into our historic records, and this handwritten entry from March 1891 gives us a fascinating glimpse into the day-to-day running of the Trust.

The minutes of the Estates Committee meeting cover everything from the re-election of the Chairman to decisions about the Trust's property and land.

One particularly interesting discussion concerned a proposal to sell a piece of land to Mr Unsworth. After the correspondence was read to the committee, it was proposed that the land should not be sold. The matter was put to a vote – and the decision was unanimous.

The committee also discussed a warehouse at Morledge, where Mr George Eley of Belper had agreed to pay £15 a year in rent, plus the rates. The building was subsequently being put into repair in preparation for his occupation.

It's fascinating to see how much of the Trust's historic work centred around property, rents, repairs and making decisions about its land and buildings – responsibilities that, in many ways, still form part of the Trust's work today.

And perhaps the biggest difference? No emails, spreadsheets or computerised property systems – just beautifully handwritten minutes in an old ledger.

These records provide a wonderful window into the people, properties and decisions that have helped shape the Trust over the generations.

135 years on, we're still looking after the Trust's legacy – and there's plenty more history waiting to be discovered in our archives.

Meet Fudge
Hi everyone! My name is Fudge, and I’m a very handsome 10-year-old Burmese cat.

And this is my dad, who just happens to work for the Liversage Trust as their Maintenance Team Leader. I understand he’s pretty good at his job… although I might be slightly biased because he’s my favourite human.

Believe it or not, when I was a kitten I was a mixture of white and brown, but over the years I’ve gradually changed colour and am now a beautiful deep brown. I think I’ve aged rather well.

One of my favourite things is greeting Dad when he comes home by jumping onto his shoulder. Although, I’m getting on a bit now, so it’s becoming a little more difficult… and perhaps Dad is getting a little less enthusiastic about it too.

I also have two sisters, who may well show their faces on Facebook at some point. Dad tells me I’m the alpha of the house, so obviously I’m in charge.

I’m also VERY interested in food. In fact, if I hear or smell Dreamies, I can practically run through a wall to get to them! Good job Dad is so good at fixing things.

First thing in the morning, I like to give Dad a gentle headbutt or a little nip on his leg – particularly if there’s food involved. And if there’s a slice of chicken going spare… well, you can definitely count me in.

I’m thinking I might have to ask Dad if I can come into work with him one day. I could supervise the maintenance team and make sure everyone is doing their job properly.

But most importantly… don’t forget the Dreamies!

We’re delighted to unveil the new signage at The Liversage Court Care Home, giving the entrance a fresh, welcoming feel for residents, their families, friends and visitors.

First impressions really do matter, and the new signs help create a friendly and inviting entrance that reflects the warm and caring environment inside.

And who better to show off the new signage than Liversage Court’s Care Home Manager – Georgina Bannister, who is pictured proudly alongside the finished signs.

We hope residents and their families enjoy the new look as much as we do- a small change that makes a big difference to the welcome at Liversage Court.

Meet Yogi

Hi everyone, I’m Yogi, a very handsome 7-year-old Shih-poo – that’s a Shih Tzu crossed with a Poodle.

I’m a very friendly boy and I get on really well with other dogs. In fact, I have a special girlfriend called Pip, who lives on the same estate as me at the Liversage Trust. Our humans often take us both to the park for a good run around, and if a ball is thrown, I’m such a gentleman that I always let Pip get to it first.

I’m also a BIG fan of treats – or “tweeties”, as my human calls them.

Now, there is one thing I’m not particularly keen on… the groomers! My human actually has to carry me inside because, apparently, I’m being a bit of a baby.

But there is something I absolutely LOVE doing at the park… rolling around in fox poo 🦊💩

Unfortunately, my human isn’t quite as enthusiastic about this hobby and gets very cross with me.

When I’m out and about, I often bump into my other furry friends, Stan the Cockapoo and Millie the Spaniel, and we all get on brilliantly.

And finally, there’s something else I really enjoy when I’m at the park. Sometimes there’s an exercise group of some very nice ladies, and I just have to go over and say hello. After all, everyone needs a little Yogi greeting.

So that’s me – Yogi, the friendly, treat-loving, fox-poo-rolling, ball-sharing gentleman.
