Lots of fun last night making Japanese style friendship bracelets. It was a bit tricky getting started but once the pattern clicked, some of us were whizzing away.

For our discussion we talked about the term ‘neurodivergent’ and different ways people can be ND eg ADHD, dyslexia…

It was a quiet evening on Friday at Derby’s Being Us group. It’s that time of year when lots of us have winter bugs and are feeling under the weather.

We thought we’d get in the festive spirit by making some Christmas decorations. We used fancy papers to make a lantern style decoration with tassel, and a Christmas jumper tree decoration on its own little wire coat hanger.🎄

For our discussion we talked about some the challenges that Christmas brings and strategies to cope with these.

Confession! I forgot to take photos of the girl’s makes, so this is a picture of mine and Vicky’s versions! Oops 😅

On Friday at Derby group we welcomed some new members to the group. For our activity we made bracelets, using letter beads and some lovely colour combinations.

In our discussion we talked more about energy accounting and how we can identify how draining particular activities can be. This is helpful so we can try not to wear ourselves out.

We made ‘battery’ visual tools while we talked and on the back, we wrote down some things we can do to recharge our batteries. Brilliant ideas and reflections shared this evening!

Tonight at the Ripley group, we created collaged scrapbooks for the members to take home and use as they wished.

At discussion we chatted about anxiety management, mindfulness and distraction. Breathing techniques, special interests and other mindfulness strategies were discussed. Some great suggestions and lovely to see the peer support that always blows us away. 🥰

It was great to meet up again after a little break for half term. We welcomed a new member to the group which was lovely.

This week we made autumn leaf garlands from felt and embroidery threads. We also found some ready made leaves in the cupboard!

For our discussion we talked about Spoon Theory. This is a way of energy accounting which gets us to think about how much energy we might use to do certain tasks, and that we need to be aware of this to have enough energy for the day. There’s lots of information about this online if you’d like to know more.

The girls made a great comment, comparing our energy stores to a phone battery. We love this analogy!

Last Friday at our Derby group, we did pompom craft. Lucy demo’ed how to make a tassel and Karen showed us how to use the pompom maker tool AND how to make a pompom the old school way with cardboard!
We also added beads and key ring clips to personalise our creations.

Our discussion was about ‘coping with disappointment’, in the sense of when things don’t live up to expectations. For example, when you visit a place and it’s not as good as you’d thought it would be, or an event you were looking forward to gets cancelled.

Some strategies we discussed -

Write it down (or draw) - putting the feelings of disappointment down on paper can help to process them

Put it into context - ask yourself will this matter in a few days, weeks or months?

Focus on the good - try to find a silver lining in the situation eg, you might be disappointed that a friend has cancelled your plans but the positive could be that now you have time to catch up with the tv series you’re watching or do another activity that you enjoy.

Our next session is Friday 24th October 6-8pm

Yesterday at the Ripley group, we stitched keyrings.
It kept the members busy for the whole session.

Discussion was about The Spoon Theory.
Lots of interesting contributions on this including one member admitting that it can take up a couple of spoons to even pluck up the courage to come to the group. Although she felt she gained more spoons if she attended, sometimes she just didn’t have enough to come due to all the other expectations she experienced earlier in the week. She would then feel sad about not attending afterwards.
We get it! Sometimes we need rest and that is absolutely OK 👌🏻
Another great session.

If you don’t know what The Spoon Theory is, here is a great explanation by The Brain Charity to explain it- https://www.thebraincharity.org.uk/whats-spoon-theory/

Last night at our Derby group, we stitched onto Binca. What I love is seeing how everyone produces something different and uniquely them 🥰
It was great to meet two new members of our group, and I’m looking forward to the next session already!
The girls shared some great ideas for future activities and discussions 😊
