For some neighbours, they still question whether there will be enough quality food on their table this holiday.

As part of Latin Heritage Month, YSM’s Latin Heritage Committee invited colleagues on a vibrant learning walk through Toronto’s Kensington Market, celebrating the rich flavours, stories and resilience of Latin communities in our city.

Together, we discovered local Latin American restaurants and businesses, tasted dishes like Peruvian ceviche, Mexican tamales and taquitos, and shared warm churros while hearing the histories and traditions behind each bite.🌎

As Arleen from the Committee reflected, the time together was about much more than food. It was an opportunity to honour culture, deepen understanding and strengthen connections with one another and with our Latin neighbours.

1 in 10 Torontonians relies on food banks.

Grief can feel lonely, but you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Our Grief and Loss Support Group offers a compassionate, supportive space to connect with others who understand the experience of loss, while allowing you to take time to care for yourself.

The group also includes art therapy, offering another way to express and process feelings that can sometimes be difficult to put into words.

Join us on Wednesdays from 1:00-3:00 pm from October 14–December 2, 2026 at YSM's Martin Centre, 306 Gerrard Street East.

At YSM’s Evergreen Centre for Vulnerable Youth, a cooking workshop is helping young people build skills for much more than the kitchen.

Through a partnership with La Tablée des Chefs, youth are learning practical cooking skills, how to cook on a budget, healthy eating and how to work as a team. They’re also building confidence, meeting new people and developing friendships.

The initial program has grown from a pilot to a full series of 20 weekly workshops. This year, two youth will have the opportunity to complete a placement with a professional chef, opening a pathway to future employment.

Six young people have also successfully earned their Food Handler Certification.

As participant Mikkayla says, the program has given her “valuable hands-on experience in a supportive, caring and patient environment.”

We’re proud of what these young people are cooking up and grateful to La Tablée des Chefs for helping create opportunities that extend far beyond the kitchen. ❤️

What does it actually take to move forward?

That’s the question YSM President & CEO Angie Peters brought to CP24 Toronto's Breaking News this week, following Toronto’s first mayoral debate and its focus on the city’s 107,000-household waitlist for rent-geared-to-income housing.

For YSM, housing isn’t just about having a roof over your head. It’s about having the stability to work, care for your family and build a future.

Angie talked about the need for more housing, but also for housing that gives people options to move forward as their circumstances change.

After decades without building social housing at the scale Toronto needs, we need to think differently about how we create housing that works for people at different points in their lives.
