We had a waffle lot of fun with Ben Clanton last Friday when he stopped by The Children’s Book Bank Regent Park to share stories and drawings! Thanks to each child was able to take home a free Narwhal and Jelly book as well as special postcards, stickers, and bookmarks!

“My children and I had a wonderful time—it felt so warm and jelly-tastic! It was our first time attending an author visit session and we felt like VIPs, thanks to all the thoughtful details. Ben was so natural and friendly. His passion for literacy inspired us and took the experience to another level. My kids are thrilled to continue reading his books at home. We are fortunate to have the Book Bank and artists like Ben in our community.”

Last month The Children’s Book Bank was invited to participate in an event cohosted by and . Twenty Book Bank families joined in on the fun to watch Dog Man: The Musical at CAA Theatre.

Live theatre plays a supporting role in literacy development, bringing stories off the page and into a shared community experience. Oral storytelling has long been one of the most powerful ways children learn language, build vocabulary, and develop comprehension skills, complimenting traditional reading.

The experience also highlighted the importance of fostering joyful connections to reading. By pairing live performance with a copy of Dog Man book for each child to take home, families were encouraged to continue the storytelling experience beyond the theatre.

Last week author Barbara Reid and photographer Ian Crysler stopped by The Children’s Book Bank to donate hundreds of Barbara’s books! Our staff were delighted to receive copies of beloved stories like The Subway Mouse, The Party, and The Story Hunter in a variety of different languages making reading fun and accessible for all our visitors!

We are so grateful to Barbara, Ian, and the many other children’s authors and illustrators who make it possible for us to provide free books to children and families across the city!

You can support us by donating new and gently used books for children and teens. Our next community donation day is this Saturday, May 23 from 11am-2:30pm at our downtown warehouse next to 334 Bleecker St.
